My starter motor wasn't engaging with the flywheel properly.
So I decided to pull it apart.


First take out the long screws:


Yep, it's a little dirty:


Then after you've taken off the solenoid, you can take it apart:



At step two, a little ball bearing fell out. You can see it in the third pic. Can anyone tell me where it came from?
And what grease should I be using when I put it back together? I've got bearing grease and molly grease here.

That ball bearing sits on the end of the shaft on the bit on the right hand side in second pic off the top of my head.. I know it sits on the end of one of the shafts..

I like to use a fine layer of moly grease on the motor itself and PTFE on the solinoid.. I pull mine down and clean it atleast every 5 or 6 months..

It fell out as I separated the motor section from the geared section. So it makes sense that it came off the end of the motor's shaft.

I took the end of the motor off to have a look. It was just a little dusty in there. Pretty good, considering how long it spent underwater on the last trip!

So, it's all lightly greased, back in the car and working beautifully

Oh, this is one of the narrow-body, reduction-type starters from eBay if anyone is wondering. It's been in for over a year now, and is in good nick, considering the abuse it cops.
