I sold the fibre glass front roof section off the sierra on Ebay last week.I had stacks of people wanting it.Two people even said if they won the auction I could keep the rear canopy and just mail them the roof at their cost .So Im guessing these roofs are like rockin horse $hit.
Im lucky enough to have a mate that has a business building alloy boats.Ive allready made ally floor pans door trims and other bits and pieces.So on Monday Im going down there to build a checker plate roof.
Do you guys think there is a market for these front sections.We can make them out of checker or plate ally with all the clips and insulation inside thats used on the boats?
Its not a big deal for the business they make $100 000 boats and plenty of them .The ally in a roof would be about $50 plus the clips and labor.and they would'nt bother if there isnt plenty of gravy in them.
So what do you think,on monday do we bother making a second roof and if we did whet do you think people would pay for it?

I have a fibreglass lid.

I wish it had a small lip along its side egdes to channel the rain to the front or rear of the door.

I wish I had the factory fittings with it (they are about $100 from suzistore, and I dont need them that bad).

This is just my opinion, checkerplate looks cheap and tasteless. Chckerplate door trims and what not look terrible.

Lauby's fitting on the outside is a decent idea, as I am concerned about heads hitting the fittings in the factory locations on the side.

I want one, but nothing bulky or oversize like most options that are out there. Sleek and streamlined. I'm considering buying a LROR front section, but if something local can be made that didn't look like a flipped boat on the roof i'd be all in for it.

if you can do it in thin ally sheet to fit in all nice and neat so I can just tech screw it on i'll take one, I don't need clips.

You could do it with nutserts in the body and some stainless cap screws, that would look quite neat.

Problem with making anything for sierra owners is they still only want to pay good second hand prices, so $100-$150 tops

Im in for sure if you can make a Heavy duty one out of 3mm alloy so it passes scruitinering fir the cq winch truck challenge id happily pay the premium fir heavier meterial and what sort of money do the fiberglass ones go for

Yea I do think the smaller roofs look neater,like the one above.But as said a lot of people arent checker plate fans.The other thing that might be possible is to make it out of say 3mm plate ally and tac a couple of small ribs under it.you could paint it the same as your car.
I have to build one anyway so ill see how much stuffing around it turns out and that would give us a good idea on a price.
I know what your saying Royce,What happens with these boats is they come pre cut on big ally sheets and you grind the tags out to get all the pieces,so there is lots left over.All these offcuts either get sent for recycle or better used for stuff that is sold for profit,I make bike racks and fishing rod holders for example.So to do a roof it would have to be pretty easy to make so the price isnt so high that nobody would buy one.And as said not look like a flipped over boat or a pizza tray.

Allowing people to arrange their own fitting is an option.
They can drill it install the factory fittings, or drill it and tekkscrew into car, or use nutserts etc.
This means less screwing around in manufacturing keeping the costs down, and gives the buyer more flexibility.

3mm plate would be the go, can be painted by purchaser or left in bling.
No need for ribs (imo).

Only dickaround would be the folding to get it neat etc.

I had my glass top with canopy for auction with a starter bid of $350 I had 2 people said if they won the auction would I consider posting them the roof section and keep the canopy for myself.That means even if they got the lot for $350 by the time they paid freight{one in perth)they would be lookin at $400 for a roof section only.Ive seen a few canopies around $150-$200.I guess if you were to make these things your not doing it to supply cheap roofs your doing it to make cash and the people above are the ones you would be catering for.
