Finally pulled my clock spring unit out and the spring itself is munched up completely just due to continued use after breakage I would say.

Is there any repair companies in Aus, or preferably in Brisbane that have the materials and expertise to repair these things? Looks like, just a new piece of ribbon and a little bit of time to refit and it'd be fixed. I'd do it myself if I could get the ribbon.

Any clues?

Get a 2nd hand one.... out of a car that hasn't had a deployment....

Few and far between because thats usually the reason they are being wrecked
And any that are not deployed are still multiple hundred dollars and they want to sell with the combo switch.

This is a sad story. However it does not change the fact that you need a new one.

Fixed. Had a early unit that had different connections, so I spent time pulling the connectors off each and swapped them.

Well they were made by a certain someone who cut corners and didn't make them out of the material he said he would. They weren't cromo, just HT steel (and not even CDS), and the break started at the weld.

And I would have thought this was better than NOT having a working clock spring as I haven't for the past 6 months.

Cold drawn seamless doesnt imply in any way that it is a structural grade product, Chrome Moly IS high tensile steel

CRMO requires de-stressing after it has been welded. Otherwise the metal stores tension in the area surrounding the weld, which makes it brittle. Relaxing the metal in a controlled environment ( oven) is needed to normalise the stresses within the material and any welded areas.

Even if your arms were CRMO they were undoubtedly not heat treated after manufacture, making them as strong as the weakest point.......the weld area.

Alot of HT steels benifit from heat treatment after welding.

Well, its in, horn works and no deployed air bag. Not the trickiest thing I've ever attempted. So yeah, I think I'll be right.

I think the time has come to stop blaming the manufacturer of the arms and accept that you drive it like it's a rental.

No amount of special engineering is ever going to withstand your driving style.

Oh, I KNOW how I drive it, however, I do think a quality product would have not failed.

So instead of offering advice on how to go about doing something effectively, that I was going to do, and have done anyway, all you've done is criticise and tell me how wrong it is. If you don't actually know, thats ok but perhaps you should not comment in that case. So, thanks for your help.

I just wonder how many mods on your car are not legal, and are safetly related... tyres, under sized brakes etc??

I think the problem is everyone sees you drive like a ham fisted loon due to constantly smashing into shit, breaking shit and tearing driveline components off and then see you wish to tackle complex fixes you need to ask basic questions about to proceed

it comes under the term a little bit of knowledge is dangerous

Also there are mods that may not technically be legal but are well planned and carried out to a professional level, and then there's bodgy fixes that are just dangerous. How can you bag the fabricator of those arms when you feel justified in welding it back together. Doesn't make sense.

wont always mate, sometimes it can be just horn not working cos there is 2 circuts in it. but if you have a broken clockspring for heaven's sake listen to stekky cos you dont wanna mess with the airbag system, Highly illegal and stupid, yes its not cheap but if you want a car without airbags buy an older one

Sit's behind the steering wheel, it keep's contact with the horn & air bag even when the wheel's turning..
If turned to far they break, which is what I'm guessing happened to this thing.
