Ok so I am being a sook.

Ever since I put my front Air Locker in. My vitara has been a CV eating machine.
Seems everytime I go out, I smash a CV. My car is not biased and I have broken 2 passenger side CV shafts.

Now, I was aware with a locker you are more likely to break them. However, this seems ridiculous.

I am the first to admit, occasionally I do have a heavy right foot. But, I have tried a full day of crawling (no heavy accelaration) and have still at the end of the day ended up with a rattling cv.

Today has astonished me. I went out 4x4ing with a mate. It was his first time out and I only intended to drive fire roads and show him around.
Drove her very easily and didn't climb more then 2 little hills. they were all Very slow crawls aswell.
Front locker was used once and only once.

Can anyone guess what I ended up with? Thats right, 2 broken CV's.

I have no clue how this happened? they aren;t sheared right off, just clunking. I am guessing I didn't research enough and I am doing something wrong.
I only steer whilst driving with the locker engaged. Meaning, no dry steering.

I am stumped. Could it be that I am using second hand cv's? wrong grease in the boots?

Any help would be appreciated.

I broke one with no locker turning up a bank on the beach, I know a guy could pop both at will on flat ground, its all in the turning angle and throttle use

vertical angle means for nothing :) who breaks a CV will the wheels pointing ahead :)

Not sure how to write this. I had front air locker in my GV for over 3 years and drove it rather hard and never broke one?
Drove most of G/house (except big red)
Remember with a locker you don't have to hit that track that you used to have a hard time driving. You should be able to drive it a lot slower.
I don't know your driving habbits but just giving you how I went.
Maybe you have it a full lock where the cv is at it's weakest?
It's always a gamble buying 2nd hand so as butter knife said, try a new one.

but when that CV is maxxed out at full droop, plus has a bit of lock on & someone uses the throttle a bit?

at least starting with a nice & flat CV angle they're not at the end of their usable angle when you're either end of the suspension travel.

same guy that smashed em when he wanted reckons he broke less cv's when he took the drop brackets out

steering whilst stationary.

Bruce, I have been driving things much slower. Well, trying to. Seems like I am doing harder tracks now.
Since the locker, I am never flat foot and never bouncing whilst on the go-go.
Saying that, I don't have as much experience as you and could be doing it all wrong.

Atari, my cv angles are near flat. The control arms are almost horizontal.
I'd assume that cv angle is not a problem. Once again, I could be wrong. Once I have cv's in I will upload a picture,

I will try a new cv. Can anyone recommend a cheap place to get them. I rang my locals and none of them could get 26 spline inners

How much extra droop do u have and have u adjusted ur steering stops
To much steering lock is the biggest killer of cvs
If u find ur steering lock doesn't suck and u don't have to do 3 point turns all the time then u have to much lock and that's the cause

haha thats gold. seems your luck was as bad as mine. Do cv's just wear out and become prone to breaking.
Now my car idles :D THANK GOD! I found myself barely on the throttle. just idling.

have you taken note of when your most likely to bust a cv?"

Steve (sikid) used to lock up his front cvs as he had too much drop. Due to over angle. But he did not use any sort of diff drop brackets, had 3 inch springs and extented front shocks.

I didnt go ARB locker in the front, as i liked the though of an auto locker, as i was told they have alittle more give. Dont quote me on that, im sure someone has a better idea.

i dunno what you are doing wrong maybe its the second hand cv's as my cv angle is alot worse then urs and ive only done one cv in 3 years and that one cv was bouncing around in third gear low

if i was you id go get new cv's and transfer case gears as soon as you can alot less loud pedal is needed then

Here's a video of where I broke a CV. I can see where it gets broken and I understand it wasn't an ideal driving style but I have friends that think no way it should have broken.
Or could it have just been the right CV angle and torque?

Pardon the swearing at the end NSFW

I'll put my 2 cents in. Don't use seconds hand Cv's. Their $50 for new outers with boots.

In my experience my diff drop brackets have made a big difference to my CV eating Vitara. I have a fresh set in now and have not heard a single click in over 2 months! World record.

But I am also very consious of their position throughout a hard trail and my right foot is leanient.(locked rear is lovely) Keep in mind of sharp corners and also ruts where the Front A arms are at max droop. Scary Cv angles.

IMHO front airlockers should only be used when needed. Auto would be more forgiving for up front.

Fully locked IFS makes me cringe. That's a $100 per use fancy locker switch ya got there ;)

To me it seems like a driving style type thing.
My guess is you broke it when you turned right and popped the clutch.
Maybe a set of crawler gears is what you need, it will slow you down but you will still have power.
Just a guess.

I admit it was silly maneuver. But that was an example of me driving it hard.
I have heard crawler gears only make things worse. Any input on this?

I don't have problems any other time

Since I put the cromos in, I've broken only 1, and that was just due to dropping the clutch whilst on the chassis at Ripley, and not going anywhere. I have given mine hell. Also not broken any hub bolts since I upgraded the spacers either.
