Hey Guys
going to get a steering damper
at the moment EFS is winning the race at $100

so looking for something a step up from the factory one, if any of you guys have had some good experience or advise on where to buy then spill the beans amigo.

I personally like the tough dog RTC's ( return to center) steering damper. Many people don't like them, but i think they are great. http://www.4wd1.com/Sierra.htm

I've been looking into getting one too... From what I've read, alot if people don't like the rtc's. A couple of guys reckon they fruck your power steering setup?don't know how true this is though?

I hated my steering damper. Much prefer without.

Firstly, what's wrong with the one that's on there? They rarely "wear out" as they don't do very much work compared to a shock absorber.

As per Alien - If it's stuffed, take it off and see how you like the steering feel. Many people think the steering feels better without a damper. The one on my car is (I think) at least 25 years old and I've never looked at it. It's probably doing less than nothing.

If you need to replace it, buy anything you want except a RTC damper. Caster is what returns steering to centre, not a spring on the steering damper. RTC is marketing rubbish to try and generate a unique selling point for a very basic device.

the only step up is the calmini setup that goes on your diff, otherwise just get the cheapest

I agree that that's the best place for a steering damper, but that wouldn't last a trip down here. And as for the bracket going under the axle housing

I've had a few cars with axle mounted dampers and smashed them all.

i had a standard one on and went to a EFS (so called h,duty) and it started leaking after a few months, peiceofshit.. went to rtc toughdog and never looked back.

Hrmm...

was told this might help the play in my steering on sealed road.

But if some of you run without them then perhaps the damper is just not even part of the problem in the first place.

along with the steering box of course but perhaps I should focus there first.

i prefer my steering without it, however i have been wheeling in some ruts that swung the steering wheel very hard brusing some fingers. really need one in thoose situations. a damper not a rtc one (dont like rtc's)

If you get the efs one get larger washers and new bushes I bought one and the bushes crumbled trying to put them in and some where the wrong size pretty Pisa poor effort of a big comperny if you ask me they sell some cheap ones on eBay that might be good just buy and try if ask me I kicking myself but I haven't fitted mine yet due to laziness

tie rod / drag link ends

I thought steering dampers helped for if the wheels are ripped either left or right in a hurry, it dampens and trys to slow the effect so your steering wheel isnt completely ripped away with your hands still attached.

its easy to compress a shock slowly, but try do it real fast.
