No 5th gear much
Burn out your clutch quicker
Shit hill starts
Loose top end speed on highway unless going down a hill.

It's drivable but it's best to get gears so you clutch is happy

Offroad you need to flog it to get anywhere.
If you try to climb things you'll slip/burn out your clutch leaving you to sit and wait for it to cool down before you can keep driving.
Take offs on road need a slight clutch slip.
Fuel bill goes up.
Drivability goes down.

And it's just fucking frustrating. So save the hassle, and get gearing.

you dont NEED it, but i guarantee that after driving it for a while on 31's, you'll realise you want them bad. it just doesnt crawl, even in low 1st.

The car moves without gearing but it's not worth wasting your time..
I would say you do NEED them.

29's (235/75r15).

Gears are roughly $500 depending on what ratio you get.

ANY increase in tyre size over stock will nett a reduction in drivability in the absence of gearing.

So where YOU draw the line in the sand may be different to someone else. And the money you don't spend on gearing straight away will be chewed up by extra fuel, clutch, and other repairs brought about by having to ride your clutch and generally ring your cars neck to get it places.

Get the gears asap.

Also worth noting that the costs don't stop mounting at what the gearset costs you. It is advisable to install a fresh set of bearings etc when fitting the gears to help keep them running as they should.

235/75R15's are driveable on stock gearing, but they still suck on any kind of ascent - and descent control is crap too. They're fine on road though and can be cajoled places offroad so long as you don't mind butchering your clutch.

I drove mine around the block on 31's with stock gearing (having driven 235/75R15's for a few years with stock gearing) and parked it up in the garage until my gears arrived. It was near undriveable.

So short story - definitely swap out your Tcase gears if going to 31's, and further to Fatzook's comment re bearings, allow for fresh Tcase mounts and a Roctoy ring or similar. I broke a stock mount pretty quickly with the new gears, and the Roctoy ring (if fitted properly) will help transmit torque from the housing back into the mounts and stop you splitting your Tcase.

Is a transfer rebuild with new bearings and crawler gears possible without a press?
If you do the roctoy ring and upgraded mounts, is the transfer case reliability still an issue with 31's on 3.7 diff gears?

Good to know... the gearing options are kind of screwy, when you look at replacing the 3.7's with 4.57's...
Since i was going to get dual lockers i was thinking 4.57's would be good just to take the load off the transfer, but if its a non issue i will just get some transfer gears!

Where do you get 4.57's from? Never seen that ratio before.

Right.

Why not just use 4.625 vitara R&P's? WAY cheaper!

4.1's would be nice... but appear to be like rocking horse s***
3.9 don't really seem to be worth the effort.
~4.6's seem to give too many revs on the highway once transfer gears are fitted, and i don't thing they would give a good crawl ratio with std transfer gearinbg

Yeah 4.1' are not common. You can also get 4.3's from GV's aswell.

AHHH... 4.3 gives the good numbers with 4.16 Transfer gears!

GV is Grand Vitara I presume? what model exactly am I looking for?

that combo would give me a 65.33:1 crawl ratio, which sounds good
and ~3700 rpm highway cruise.

Not sure. They aren't the most common ratio, but probably easier to find than sierra WT 4.11's.

That model never existed in Australia - three speed auto EFI 1.6.

I'm not sure what model used 4.3's in Australia, but they would be almost impossible to find - remember you need to find two cars being wrecked to get two front diffs.

If you really want to do diff gears, just go 4.6 - much easier to find. 3986rpm @ 100 isn't ideal, but it's liveable - It's pretty much the same highway revs a stock jimmy runs.

However, throwing some 6.4 transfer gears in and leaving the diffs 3.7 is pretty good, - 3400rpm @ 100 and 84:1 crawl. You would need to change diff gears if you wanted bigger tyres though, and with, say, 33's and 4.6 diffs you are back to 3900@100 and a 107:1 crawl.

Generally, the beauty of transfer gears is they let you stay out of doing diff gears. It's pretty expensive to do a transfer and both diffs to run a 31" tyre.

Steve.
