I'm looking at buying a very early 1 litre (1981!) that has a dead gearbox (Jumps out of second, clunks in 4th, clutch slips too). It comes with a good gearbox to go in it but I was wandering if it's possible to use an LJ80 gearbox/gearset in some way or form so I can get a lower 1st?

Also, can My LJ80 clutch be used? (got a practically new one)

Can LJ80/stockman jackshafts be used in a SJ40? (I think I've got one with good unis)

Anyone in the Mandurah area willing to lend me some space and a tree or something so I can put a new gearbox and clutch in it?

Thanks

Hayden

lower first is the least of your worries, just fit the good box with a new h/d clutch and DO THE REAR MAIN SEAL
while its all out

Have you checked the Manual???

I don't have access to mine right now, but I think you will find the Type 1 SJ40 has the same gear ratios as the LJ80 with a 3.835:1 1st (Both are "Small Case" gearboxes), it is only the Type 3 that has a "Large Case" gearbox witha 3.163 1st gear.

I'll drag out my manual and check tomorrow.

LJ80 clutch is the same.

And what's the tree for? Pull the Sierra gearbox off the back of the engine from underneath. It's only an LJ one that has to come out with the engine.

Cheers mate, I have noticed none of them have a good rear main!

I don't have a Sierra manual. :( A library a few towns away has one though.

Once again, thank you all knowing Suzuki god, I shouldn't have assumed the small case had the same ratios.

Go to know I don't need to pull the engine out, as you can probably tell I haven't done much work on Sierras.

Thanks

Nope. :D Nice orange glow when you look south though. The fire's a few kms down the road.

Has the smoke made it up there?

Beleive it or not, it was barely smokey at all this morning, just like a slightly misty day, in the afternoon however....

Cheers, me too. :P

We're pretty safe now, unless something extreme happens....

I'm going to Mandurah today (to look at this SJ40) and mum's working all day so I hope the house is still here when we get back! 8O

Does anyone know if an F8a rear main seal will fit an F10a?

99.99% sure it will. Engines are pretty much identical apart from the capacity and carby...

If you want some easy lower gearing, throw a pair of your LJ81 4.5 diffs in it. Not a huge difference, but will help.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're the same too. I tried to see if Suzistore list them as the same part number but it appears they don't have LJ80 rear main seals on their online store? :?

Where's 303zuke when you need him?!

The LJ81 diffs is exactly what I have planned. :) Those + the 30" KM2s, some spring lift and some barwork, maybe a lockright for winter then I'l call it done. :) It's just something to drive and wheel until (if I ever....) finish the LJ. :D

Given the rate at which I work on stuff, I'l be lucky to have "built" that by the end of the year anyway, let alone doing anything more extreme on it.

While on topic of sj40s. I have a 10 month of 84 sj40. What's the diff ratios in it? And what can be swapped in and out in regards to diffs and shafts? It's the 1 liter switch case.

It will have 4.1:1 diffs. 4.5(from an LJ80) and 4.8 (LJ50) will fit, so will 5.12 from a supercarry but those are rocking horse poo, they do allow you to fit air lockers though.

I wouldn't lock it with that gearing, it will be attrocious... (border line unlocked anyway). Mine is marginal when the idiot buttons are on with its 57:1 crawl...

I wouldn't be locking it for the awesome crawling stuff, we don't have much of that here :( it'd be for the mud, power won't be so much of a problem there. :) I've seen so many bogged 4WDs where a locker would have them walking out. A 1 litre is narrow enough to avoid that most of the time but given how much solo stuff I'l be doing......

I'd only get one if I found it necesary anyway. ;)
