Hey AZ, I'm new here, as you can tell by my first post Anyway, I have a 94 Samurai with 5" lifted leaf springs, I am now up to the task of selecting new shocks, I have done a bit of searching but couldn't turn much up on the subject, are there guidelines for selecting shock sizes or does anyone have any suggestions for new shock length? Am I basically just looking for something similar sized with 5 or 10 inch more travel? Cheers, nice to be here! -Virt

5" spring lift , they must be arched like a banana!!! remove shocks, flex up suspension, measure the distance required for open & closed lengths & go from there.

5" springs won't need shocks. The enormous rate required to hold that much height will render shocks meaningless.
There is no possible functional reason to run 5" springs. There is no functional reason to even run 3" springs.
As you are obviously not interested in the function of your vehicle, I have no advice to offer. Run whatever you think looks the coolest.

Because it might convince to OP that two wrongs don't make a right- matching shock length to too-tall, too stiff springs is pointless.

I'm guessing its got 5" of lift, total. I don't know of any spring maker that would make such a thing. The chance of it working are so slim.

Steve. Steve, you didn't ask what sort of springs. I have YJ springs to go on, stock, 9" longer in the front than stock suzi springs, and they give 4.5" of lift. There are ways, not just springs bent like a longbow at full draw.

They're not "5" lifted springs" though, they are wrangler springs set up to provide 4.5" of lift. As is often the case, the OP provided so little information that proper advice isn't possible. If the normal run of things occurs, it will take quite a few more posts from the OP outlining the details of thr setup, and more back and forth from us, before the forum can provide useful advice. Steve.

Steve is the new Grimbo So, Virt, please give more details of your complete setup and what your intentions with the vehicle are. Do this in future and see more informative answers given.

Haha, I see I should have explained further, apologies.
I shouldn't have said 5" lifted springs, I've installed springs, shackles and a front shackle reversal kit to give me a 5 inch lift all up. Sorry for the confusion.

Well that makes more sense now. Sounds like the Calmini kit. Best way to sort out shocks for any setup is to remove the shocks and flex the vehicle on opposite ends till the diffs hit the bumpstop. Then simply go and measure the compressed and closed lengths between the shock mounts and go shopping!

Use ramps/jacks? I got the bits from Locktup 4x4 in WA, the rears are trailgear and the fronts were custom made by a friend of a friend of a friend that owns Locktup Not sure where the shackle reversal kit is from.

Ahh now this is something I have experience in. Firstly, start by removing some leaves as standard that kit flexes like crap. And then you will have to look into some upper shock mounts for front and rear. The shocks calmini provide with the kit are crap, the rears end up destroying themselves on the brake line brackets and the fronts bottom out before hitting the bump stops even though they're spaced 50mm down if you used them in the kit. So get some front shock hoops and a rear upper shock mount bar and then do some measurements after flexing it up.
I've got a very molested 5" kit in my car and it's taken many years of work to get it to a point where I'm happy with and not much of it is left standard.
