Hi all,

I have a Suzuki Jimny
i was hoping someone might be able to know what is wrong, i have done a 3" lift, from Off Road Armory. it has castor corrected HD arms, HD adjustable pan hard rods with rose joints, springs, rough country dampers >3" extended brake lines. I also put in a full set of super pro poly bushes.

now my problem is at around 80-100km/h i get a steering wobble. and i cannot figure out why. tyre's are the right pressure, panhard rod is the right length to position the axle in the center of the body and its bolts are tight and not loose or sloppy. I did correct the steering arm so my steering wheel was the right way up. iv tried everything to stop this wobble. different tyre pressures lower and higher, re adjusting the panhard rod. and i cant find anything wrong with the front end at all to cause the problem.

does anyone have any ideas what could be causing it. maybe the tierod but i didn't think it would change.

my other problem is a vibration at 55-65km/h pretty much only at that speed range all others are fine. quite a heavy vibration but fast pretty much intune with the engine rpm. so im guessing it might be the rear propshaft, i did take it off(axle side) but realized i didn't need to and put it back on, never changed anything with it, basically took it off then put it right back on without changing the position of it at all.

any ideas would help greatly as im really stumped at what it could be.

Cheers,
Blake

welcome to AZ

the front end wobble is a common thing with live axles in general, it can be a number of things that cause it. have a read through this thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15499&hilit=suzuki+wobble+action & also have a look for any other threads titled "death wobble" etc

the rear end could be a dry uni joint, i'm not really upto speed with the Jimny's... one of our Jimny nutters will fill in the gaps soon.

Aww the jimny wobble, been around for a while. Try Geting your disk brake rotors checked/machined?

thank you very much for that, that thread has given me a few ideas of what the problem with the wobble could be.

but with that dry uni joint how do you tell by looking at them if they are dry and in need of maintenance, repair or replacement,
would just a re greasing help or would it be better for a replacement?

iv been meaning to get them replaced as they have quite a lip on them at least a 1mm to 2mm lip. would they better better to replace or just machine?

Blakey, I don't believe factory suzuki uni's have grease nipples on them. They are a replacement item and can't be re-greased.

It sounds like a uni vibration though. Don't jimmy's have a CV on the output of the transfer? Do these give trouble?

im not anywhere near my jimny atm so i cant even look to tell you if it has a CV on the rear output, there is something under a boot but im unsure of what it is.

when the weekend comes ill get to some fixes for my problems and might give the uni joint a look over see how it is. id say it need replacing, my Jimny does have 200,000km's on it.

and ill have a look under that boot to see what it is

The rear shaft at the transfer end is definitely a cv and unless the boot is torn it is probably fine. I'd suggest that the rose jointed panhards are quite possibly the cause of the vibration. I've thought about using rose joints but the vibration they'd possibly cause has always scared me off.

As for the wobble, there are different types of wobble.
1. Wobble under brakes - most likely warped rotors - machine or replace
2. Random wobble, happens at unexpected times and varying conditions - worn panhard bushes or other linkage points
3. 15km/h range shimmy, usually 60-75km/h'ish - I think this is the most common and hardest to pinpoint - usually fixed by either/or/and any of the following (king pin bearings, adding shims to KP, wheel balance, toe in/out, caster angle adjustment, tyre type, wheel bearings)

i thought that they might be the problem as well, but they have no play in them at all. besides there rotation, unless one wheel can move further forward then the other i cannot see the rose joints causeing that kind of problem as long as the bolts are tight.

and many jimny users in the UK use this same lift kit that i have and do not have a problem with killer wobble.

so far it seems the most likely cause of my wobble is my track rod ends, as they are pretty rooted.

my wobble is the killer steering wobble at around 90km/h

Well if your track rod ends are rooted I'd say that's probably your problem.

As for the rose joint comment, you mentioned in your previous post a vibration that you also get. The lack of vibration dampening due to rose joint being solid and metal is what I meant. The UK boy's Jimny's tend to not be daily drivers so they can live with this solid mount.

What year is your Jimny and how many kays are on it ?

That information will give us a fair indication of the wear and tear on your rig thus helping narrow the culprit.

Cheers,

yep at my old job we had a customer come in with the death wobble after a lot of head scratching and trying different things I machined the front disc's and the wobble went

Hey all,

I have an 06 jimny which i recently lifted 2" and put 215s on. I got epic speed wobbles yesterday doing 80kmph. Will castor correction bushes be what is needed to fix this? If so does anyone have a website or good pricing for a kit and how many degrees do you recommend for a 2" lift. I had a similar problem on my old TJ wrangler but it had a much bigger lift, I thought the jimny would cope, but apparently not....

Thanks guys!

that does sound pretty logical for that but my vibration seems to only be coming from the rear and its only at 60km/h and is affected by the Revs, rather then different speeds, if it was just a general vibration that is dampened by the panhards i would expect it to be over the entire speed range at differing magnitudes

2005 206,568km, its got new kingpins and bearings, all wheels seem good with no lateral play in them when its jacked up and you pull on the wheel outwards, no play side to side either, steering seems good also with no play in the steering box that i can notice anyway. its got about 1/4" play in the driveshafts front and rear when rotated and in 4wd, slight whineing sound from the gearbox when in and out of gear cannot be heard when the gear boots are on. general whineing from the overall driveline when driving nothing abnormal. i has a small leak in the rear diff just need a new seal. but its a very monor leak. as i cleaned up the diff 2 weeks ago and havent seen any new oil on it.

hope that info can help to figureing it out,

im replacing my tierod ends and steering rod ends this weekend if they have arrived they didnt have any play in them but they looked rooted so for $60 they are a simple replace.

I had the same, I got rid of most of it by shimming the kingpins and getting my wheels balanced again.

But my kingpin bearings are on the way out now so I have to replace them.

If the vibration is coming from the rear, and its RPM based, not speed based, it would be best to look atthe rear driveshaft. If the uni and CV are ok ( after being inspected by a proper driveline shop ) check the shaft for balance. They sometimes have a weight welded to the tube. This can be knocked off, causing a slight vibration.

Other possible causes could be a bent axle. The axle could be oscillating at a particular rpm.

Things like bent radius arms or worn bearings would present in a more unifom way.

What rpm is the vibration happening? Does it happen in every gear (3,4,5) at 55-65km?

All gears all rpm only at 55-60 It's intensity just get greater with faster rpm.
