That "horrendous" beam pattern is common with HID retrofits - you're starting with lamp optics designed for a different light source - and even if you do take the trouble to position the globes so the light source is positioned correctly, there's no way to compensate for the difference in shape and size of the source.
A properly designed HID lamp will give you the same sharp horizontal cut off and upward "throw" on the left (for RHD vehicles), that you see with halogen lamps, just whiter & brighter.
