Hi guys,
Looking at buying a sierra as a weekend toy and want others opinions as to which one is the best for me.
Looking for a beach/bush car for glasshouse and similar, but would like something that can still cruise reasonably on the highway. Um think a sierra with a 1.6 vit motor will better for this? Also, what is the main difference between the coilys and leafys? (Sort from turf obvious!) Is the coilys better on road?
Are there any obvious things I should look for? Budget is around $5k.

For 5g's you should be able to get something nice!
The coilys get a bit of a bad rap... im not sure what the exact nature of the problem is, but the leafys are more capable in the bush i believe. the coily would defiantly be more comfortable on the road though.
There is also FAR better parts availibility for WT (wide track '89 on) leafys than coilys or NT models.
Personally i dont think the 1.3l is as gutless as everyone makes out, seems ok for highway use to me.... that said, the 1.6 would defiantly be nice, and with your budget you should be able to get a injected 1.6 no problem.
look for rust under the plastic 'sills' and under the front window, and around the tailgate.
If you plan on running (or the car your looking at has) bigger tires, then transfer reduction gears, or diff gears are a must (the diff gears wont help much with the too high low range though)

Have a poke around on eBay mate. I've seen a few from qld lately in there. For 5k you'll get something nice! Depends what you want really, but I don't find the 1.3L that bad to be honest.
