Vehicle: MG410 1.6efi broken rear diff

Hi All
I have a issue in rear locked diff were I occasionally lose forward motion,(just ratchet noise) then it will lock usually happens in slow take off situations.
When I raise either wheel I can freely spin wheel forward and reverse and get clear ratchet noise, with occasional lock on left side wheel.I still have diff engagment for normal driving with No abnormal noises.
Want33 said it meight be locker drive pin in another post which I think he could be right,as I'm not in a area where stripping diff would be wise why I still have drivability.
Has anyone experienced a similar issue or have a opinion as I'm trying too cover most options as it looks like it meight be a order from USA for Spartan Parts and prefer not to be waiting for long period for parts whonce diff is removed.
Thanks
Ian

My locker played around like that when I first installed it and I had to add more shims to the side gears and take some meat off the pinion block to get it to work.

Yep, you'd shimming is out, so there is enough room in your center for both sides to disengage and just spin.

With a wheel in the air you should be able to doing it freely, it doesn't 't have positive force put through it, only when there is force on it will it bind up.

Be prepared to do this every 5000-10000kms due to auto lockers being agricultural pieces of equipment that destroy uni's, backlash, bearings, shimming and gears. The only way I would run an auto lockers is shimmed up so tight it never disengages.

Spartans don't use any shims.
And you do need to make sure the side gear thrust washers are removed.

May not be a locker issue, tho not sure what it would be.

The 4 small pins can bind a bit when new,
if thats the issue, it should come good.

Yes its confusing,I should note locker has been in for 35000km just replaced side gears 5000km ago.
Everything was Okay until I did a right hand U turn on hard surface in which the diff binded causing a very load bang.On further inspection my rear left wheel nuts were lose with only few turns left.
Once tighten everything seemed okay except locker (diff) doesn't engage just a ratched noise, with low ratchet noise on turns as usual.
Before I couldn't freely spin wheel why the other wheel was in contact with ground as the couplings should be locked especially with drive shaft still attached.
If I have broken pins I have no differential action at all, damged springs and pins maybe but torque should force lock engagment and if broken side gear one axel should still be still engaged.
Its got me stumped so looks like 500km trip to strip diff

Spartans aren't the same as lock-rights, I'm pretty sure there's no shims in a Spartan (at least there isn't in mine)

You can add shims behind the side gears to tighten it up.

I have rear left traction (power) and no right side traction (idle) in mud,so I'm guessing right rear side gear failure.
So now to find a side gear

There was none with my lockrite either. But the center your putting it into has probs had a hard life, and it worn. So if you bought a new center from Suzuki the Spartan would be spot on, but wear and tear mean it's probs not going to behave like you would expect...

You might have broken an axle goldpoacher. Which could mean that you axle is just sitting in you housing.... Would be interesting to know what the final result is.

How would I go about testing for what size shims I need to install when I get around to putting my locker in? Or is it more like a put it in and test it kinda deal?

Dont use any with a brand new locker. They are tight from the get go and eventually wear in. Mines been in for a year now and its still working well but i want it a little tighter for powering through corners where it tends to freak out.

You install it without the springs, use a dial gauge, measure the movement, insert shim that takes up the room.

That's a super simple way of putting it.

And dan, if the actuahosier center is worn then won't the brand-new locker still need shimming?

Not that i found. Mine was a spool that went BANG when the tyres were at 10psi where there was enough traction to force it unlocked. Over time it loosened up.
Last time i had it out, i chucked in some very small shims which took up some of the slack after it wore.

Its spot on now. I only get chirpies when im foot to the floor. Not even carparks or servos etc, only click click click click
