"That bloke" gave up on that car after that trip. Rear R&P and CV on one medium trip. So he started building Doof (And sold it, and sitting like that, it's MUCH taller than "that bloke" planned.) And then he built this: Which was 10% of the work the Jimny was going to be to run the same tyre at the same height. And he daily drives it.... like that Steve.

It drove fine and had zero tyre scrub because it was cut like a rent boy and had bumpstop spacing. It was more practical than when it was running 30's and 80mm of lift because it was stable. It wasn't height or scrub that scuttled it, it was breakage when it got anywhere near what we call a hard track. Steve.

While the height of that jimny is good for Vic, that would stuck in WA. I still belly out on big steepups with my lift and 31s. 31zook: My hand is glued to my Dick tho, might hurt ripping it off.

It's a moot point though. Push the car on ledges and it's going to break, so unless driveline strength is sorted, the lift AND tyre size are pointless - lifted or unlifted it's broken either way.
Mitch had no breakages with 30's - once he went 32's it was incredibly fragile.
From what I have seen, Jimny's are limited to a small tyre by driveline, not their tiny arches or inability to run big tyres without huge lifts.
I don't believe an 80mm lift fits a bigger tyre than a 50mm lift, so why run a car taller than it needs to be? I "belly out" all the time. The problem with lifting a car to prevent bellying out is where do you stop? IMHO it's a much better idea to lift transfer mounts, french radius arm hangers, re-route the exhaust, and/or run a belly pan than to lift the car, because none of those other things result in lost stability.
A car that's sitting on its chassis rails is inherently stable.
But it comes back to the point that Jimny owners are more interested in bolting things on rather than go after the real problem. That might change as they get cheaper, but old Jimny's are pretty cheap, but the cost of the solutions is still high. I'll still argue that an 80mm lift creates more problems than it solves.
Steve.

Did, monley. He gave up on it and the car was sold.
Apio and Trail Gear combined in the Jimny case - came out a 5.2 or something. From memory welded front/detroit rear. Sierra hubs.
At the time, he couldn't justify (or afford) custom axles and CV's for a car that was stuck running pretty mild tyres by Vic standards, because even if the driveline was sorted he couldn't go bigger in tyre due to the huge amount of structural bodywork required to get a larger tyre on at an acceptable height.
I reckon Mud_Muncher is in the same position. It seems both the driveline and lift/tyre clearance hits the wall all at once, and it's a truly daunting amount of effort to work around.
It depends on what /who you wheel with though. Going out with Sierras on 34"+ tyres makes it hard to run a Jimny, which is why it all comes back to terrain. Clearly, Jimny's can be built to work quite well in WA and you aren't crippled by breakage or too-small tyres.

I think the main difference is the fact we just don't have the same deep mud ruts you guys have, no need for the big tyres. I am keen to test my Jim out n Vic next year though

while i respect the tech and info you bring here steve. your very single minded. i bring to the table, the polish team in the 2008(or 2007??) outback challenge, stock drivline and 205 AT's, they took it to the big boys and did well. IMHO its my experience that a lot of the terrain you drive is show pony stuff, most of the jimny owners here 4wd to get somewhere, ie fishing, camping, some weird WA camp love in. etc etc, so running 54'' tires on a jimny with 4mm while sticking their balls on the floor to lower COG isnt worth while. and IMHO in my experience i throw the challenge next time im in vic, we go wheel and i will be able to drive what you drive, albiet i will be assist winching a lot of it, but hey, all my vehicle are DD and made for long distance and wet seasons.

Whilst it's 100% true that we drive tracks for the sake of driving tracks, and many of us don't care for driving distances in order to put up a tent somewhere different or drive our cars to work each day, I don't see how that's different from going out to the power lines seemingly every weekend and taking photos of cars on the same ledges/stump over and over again. I don't think I'm being any more single minded than the Jimny drivers seeking to run the biggest possible tyre.
I'll generally assume that if someone wants 31's on their car, they want 31's for a capability-related reason. I don't see the point in making a car less capable than with smaller tyres through excessive lift, or marginal driveline strength.
I have no doubt you'll be able to winch what we drive. You'll notice that few of us run winches. Winching a track isn't driving it and holds no interest for us. Lots of people DD sierras on 31's and regularly drive hard tracks. It's generally body damage/wear and tear that results in a car not being a feasible DD anymore, not the tyre size, and that's true of any car, not just a sierra or Jimny.
I have no doubt a well built jimmy could be a better DD than a sierra with a 31. However, making sure that Jimny doesn't break with 31's on it when it's off road looks to be expensive and difficult, and that's true whether it's being DD'd or not. Mitch worked for some time in outback Queensland and put MASSES of KM on his Jimny on outback dirt roads, running 30's and <50mm of lift. It was hen he came back to Melbourne that 30's weren't cutting it any more. His car was DD'ed until he sold it.
*controversial mode on*
I have a sneaking suspicion that the interest in 80mm lift kits and 30"+ tyres on Jimny's is as much about aesthetics as it is performance. You can't see frenched radius arm mounts, you can't see a belly pan, or many other capability mods, but everyone can see yellow coils and heaps of lift. I don't have a problem with that at all - lots of people build other sorts of cars primarily to look a certain way, we're no different, but nobody ever, ever mentions it. It's really the great taboo of 4WD modification. I have no doubt that 31zook will achieve far more capability (and driveline strength) in a Jimny with the whole thing looking very stock and very DDable.

I bet you do the same as us too - hitting the same obstacles but trying different lines up them now and then to spice it up. hell, half the reason i like the night runs is because the track looks so much more different (and challenging) at night. as far as looks go - i think you're right and i totally agree that some of my mods (past and present) were purely aesthetic - although functional. anyone that claims otherwise is probably a liar =)

Before Drew and Joel out do each other with their intelligence..... Fit what ever the hell you like, I don't care what you do to a Jimny as long as it doesn't impact badly on the 4wding community (read, me). I'd suggest 9 out of 10 modified 4wds are built primarily to show off, not many people build up 4wds simply to make them better off road. If looks are more important to you (subconsciously or not), by all means, go for as much lift as you thinks looks good. Sure, I'd rather people wouldn't modify cars just to be "cool", it's probably the most prominent reason we have such ridiculous car modification laws, but that's never going to happen so I'l just live with it. Of course, if you ask anyone, they're always that 1 in 10.

I respect Steve's opinion on things more than probably anyones on this forum but yet I think we can still agree to disagree, hence I don't think he is the small minded one he likes voicing his opinion and is much better at justifying it than 90% of the other people on here. Pretty sure Steve hate's my calmini shit but doesn't mean it still doesn't work for me on my zook and I'm sure he knows that. Throwing down gauntlets of "I can drive what you drive" etc doesn't mean shit, at the end of the day I think it's the skills someone has to build a car that is respectable and in that regard nearly all of you lot will have your arses handed to you by people like Steve, Joe Blow, and a bunch of others I haven't mentioned. Dead on! I wish I was into hotrods, not stupid 4wd's. Atleast the Hot rodders appreciate a well executed stealth mod. And although its a fine line, there are things you can do to increase off-road performance without detriment to on-road manners. One such example is fitting wider axles with +offset rims. Scrub radius is reduced, giving much more positive steering on-road, but the wider diffs give better stability and a little more unsprung mass. ( what I have done on my ute ) And personally I HATE lift. If it wasn't so much work, i'd be running custom inner guards ( mini-tubs, aka: Savage Virtual lift ), raised bumps with notched rails/ sump ( ) and 37's on narrowed D44's.
