Whats involved with the swap,96 sierra coily? How much work is needed and is it relatively straight forward. good with a spanner and basic electrics.

Not a big deal if you fit a G16A (carby).
Adaptor kits are readily available or just weld a lug onto your gearbox.

G16B bolts in same as G16A but needs ECM wiring to suit.

Another option is G13BB out of Jimny, bolts in without adaptor but also needs ECM wiring.

All these engines will require sump and pickup to be swapped/modded.

Main reason for a swap is my fuel economy isnt as good as i was told it would be and chasing that little bit of extra pull up hills.recommendations?

It's unlikely that fuel economy will improve much with a conversion. The standard fuel consumption of both cars when standard is very similar, and the gearing won't change with the engine conversion to allow you to use the added torque and lower the cruise revs, where economy might improve.

In any case, engines consume about 0.5lb per hp per hour. (BSFC for petrol)

Adding a bigger motor doesn't change that figure. If you need 40hp to push the car down the road, your fuel consumption will stay largely the same regardless of the motor you use to deliver your 40hp.

However, changing to a EFI motor can improve fuel consumption a bit because the engine's fuelling can be much more accurately controlled.

Changing to a G16, carby or EFI, will improve torque output so you will have better performance up hills.

As per the previous advice, what's your tyre size and what fuel consumption figures are you getting now? These might help us to diagnose if there is something else wrong.

Steve.

im running stock everything,no tyres or gears.
economy has really been all over the place lately. on a recent highway trip i got 300 klms out of a tank on highway drive, and running around town to and from work and the ducking up the shops im gettin anywhere from 380-460 or there abouts. i did find a tear in the air intake piping this afternoon which might be causing a vacuum issue but i sprayed water over the slit and it didnt seem to be drawing to badly. if these figures are correct im kinda dissapointed.

Why? It's a revving engine and a small fuel tank. You expect more then 460km?

Anymore than 300km/tank with a 1.3 is good.
1.6 EFI will get better economy but don't expect miracles.
Best I've ever gotten was on a 2000km drive from Cairns to Sunshine Coast I averaged 8.5 litres per 100km or 11.7km per litre.
That's 470km but that is cruising at 100Km/h (3000rpm) on a trip with a slippy clutch so NO hard accelleration.
I can't see how you'd get anywhere near that 'ducking to the shops'.

My sierra ute with 4.6 diffs, 1L transfer and 29" tyres (G16B) ran between 10.5L-11.5L/100kms. So thats between 680 and 760kms per tank

Site examples. Could be a completely different car or setup for all we know.

Why would you want to? Stock coily is about 3650RPM at 100km/h - and that is where it performs best!

IMO reducing that RPM won't save you petrol or extend engine life.

Lowering your highway cruising RPM will cost you fuel, give you noticeably less power, and make your car a pain to drive as the 1.3 doesn't really have a lot of power under 3000RPM. Lowering your gearing 20% if reduced anywhere except the top gears in the gearbox would also be like driving around with 31" tyres - gutless on anything except a flat road and a killer for your clutch and a pig in stop/start driving.

Oath, just leave it. If your getting 10L per 100k's thats hardly something to whine about, mates constantly complain about their hilux's doing 14+L per 100. Like someone said if you want fuel economy buy a yaris, good fuel economy but you feel gay.

10l/100km is as much as you could regularly expect. Some Nanas might manage under 9, but it's uncommon.

You have a low tech, low torque engine. It takes about 40hp to move your car at 100km/h, and to deliver 40hp you need to be at over 3500rpm.

40HP @ 100km/h comes out at near enough 10l/100km

Steve.

Interesting, I get roughly the same fuel consumption at constant 100km/h in my road car than around town. I was surprised by this, but around town my car can use stop-start, regernative braking etc to cheat more economy. On the highway, it's back to the "normal" rules of physics, so I can't better 6.8l/100km on cruise. That's a 1875kg car, but it's also a high tech diesel at 1500rpm @ 100km/hr,

My sierra, even with 5.12s and 35's, does near 10l/100km.
