I'm having a cutout/hesitation issue with my soft top GV. Mainly noticeable on light acceleration around 1.5 - 2k rpm but can happen at any rpm, its not constant and seems rather random. The problem is like it hiccups and drops all power for a split second and recovers as it never happened.
I'm at my wits end trying to diagnose the problem, so far I have: Replaced fuel pump - no change Cleaned out EGR valve with new gasket - no change Had injectors and fuel rail cleaned yesterday - no change Put new earth leads onto engine - no change New battery - no change New spark plugs (platinum) - no change New timing belt - no change
The timing was out by ~5 degrees advanced which i fixed but made no difference, I actually lost power =/ The fuel pressure was a little low on the gauge so I manually regulated the fuel pressure to spec by clamping the return line but the problem still remained. I have individually unplugged the egr, evap system, o2 sensor but no change. I have also used a diagnostic computer and taken it for a few runs but nothing obvious shows up on the readings, no sensor dropouts/incorrect readings.
The camshaft position sensor housing is full of oil, is that normal or should it be dry?
Anyone had sometinh glike this issue
The car is a 2000 Grand Vitara soft top with G16B efi engine.

Sounds like what my V6 was doing before an oxygen sensor packed up. I happened intermittently for quite a few months before the engine light finally came on.
Cam sensor being full of oil doesn't sound right to me either.

With the cam being 5 degrees advanced it will give you more power through bottom end-mid range & you loose a tiny bit off the top. Quite a common mod on a lot of cars.

Thanks guys, I will try and source a O2 sensor locally today. I'll pull the cam sensor housing off next week and reseal it.
Heres hoping..

ive had problems where my tps lost something then car would die, then come alive again. Doing 110 uphil on a freeway in traffic, this is not good!
I loosened the tps and wiggled, and did it back up. Problem gone.
Weird, but someone else has had this prob also, cant remember who.

I don't think its the TPS. I have taken it off and checked with a multimeter, doesn't drop out across the whole range. Scan tool doesn't show any dropout on it either when it hiccups. I'll have a play with it none the less just to be sure.

Havent actually run a multimeter over the leads yet but I put my gti swift leads on it (read: bastardised them to fit down the plug holes), didnt make any noticable difference. However I am starting to think its either leads or coil packs, but the service manual has no mention to what the resistances of the coils should be.

Same engine, different ECU system, would have a light hesitation when you just push the pedal to accelerate in crawling traffic etc at low revs, adjusting the TPS fixed it
