Accessories power is only switched when the key is in the ACC or RUN positions. When you get to START, only the ignition circuit and starter wiring is switched - that is why the radio switches off everytime the car is started.
If the car doesn't crank, ensure you have power at the solenoid wire and the main battery cable to the starter. If you do and the solenoid connection is tight then your starter motor could be all that is faulty.
Flat battery? Corroded or loose terminal on the battery maybe. Power runs to things till the starter is operated then when the bigger load of the starter is applied either the battery dies or the resistance in the bad terminal or battery lead shows up as power (heat). If it's a lead or terminal you'll find it'll be hot where tha problem is. otherwise try jumperleads and another battery.
All good.....ended up being a piss poor connection in the starter earth lead at the starter end. Was quite spectacular, when starting sparks were flying
