Heya
Have a 93 wt zook with 6.5-1 reduction gears
Do these gears require a special lube or lube additive or is it still just the standard gear oil recommended for the stock transfer gears
Gonna give some of that additive that reduces noise etc a try but not sure on the gear oil to use

Hmm I also have a whining transfer after 24% reduction fitted and new gear oil. Hate the whine!

AFAIK it's just the normal GL4 gear oil. After all there's nothing fancy in there

Hopefully some oil nd some additive will quieten it down a bit otherwise will have to go to plan b nd overhaul parts with new bearings seals etc in the gearbox, drive shafts nd rear diff centre

Also going to try LS oil in the transfer nd diff because of the higher pressure and other additives that the oil is made of
As you can use ls oil in a standard and lsd diff but cant use standard oil in a lsd diff

You can use Limited Slip diff oil in a standard diff as both are GL5 rated and the LS oil will provide better protection under load, but you MUST NOT use LS oil in a gearbox or transfer case. Why? GL5 oil is for Hypoid gears which slide across each other when meshing and has particular additives to allow this, while GL4 oil (gear oil for transmissions) does not require this lubrication and is a plainer oil. The GL5 oil additives also attack bronze, like the thrust washers in your transfer case or the synchro rings in your gearbox (and Jimny transfer, Bigdogdazza!)

If you're worried about your new gears having a bit of a whine, Nulon and Penrite both have oil additives which will quieten them down until they wear in, but even without fancy additives, the gears will still eventually wear in just the same over time provided you keep the oil clean.

Well ill avoid the lsd oil in the transfer but is it safe to use a nulon or wynns diff nd trans oil treatment in the gearbox and tranfer with the bronze in it

Nulon additive seems to do the trick.

VMX-80 is my oil for Gbox, Tcase and diffs...

Nulon Gearbox & Diff oil is GL5...? Manual specifies GL-5...?

I reckon I've done at least 5,000 Km on my 6.5's and they still sound loud. I have no carpet and only one transfer boot though so that's part of the issue.

You don't hear it much until you get to around 80km/h and it's not too horrible but we will see. I may try and isolate the noise a little bit if I'm going to do a long trip

Mine can be heard from approx 55k's up
Will try some additive nd new oil nd if that doesnt fix it then thats how its gonna be untill i can be bothered nd have the money to overhaul some parts of the driveline
