Hey guys. Im wanting to spray my alloy bullbar satin black. I was told by a friend that i needed to etch primer it before i spray the paint on. Now another mate tells me i have to etch primer it and wait till it dries. Then primer it, sand it back and then start applying coats of satin black.

What do you guys reakon??

I just scuffed the alloy with some 600, hit it with etch primer and then applied some VHT satin black. Seems to hold up quite well

if its bare metal give it a light sand then use some etch primer 1 coat then some normal grey primer 1 or 2 coats light sand then what ever colour you want it to be in a couple coats. and it will be sweet.

etch primer is used to etch into the metal to help the paint hold onto the bare metal, that sand in between the primer and colour is mostly just for imperfections its not overly needed but the end result will be better if its done just make sure you clean it good after sanding and if your using Enamal don't put down thick coats or you will get bubbles forming in the paint from gas's being released in the paint i think most paints might do this if used in humid weather.

Primer will help, scuffing will help... I just wiped it down with some metho and hit it with a couple of coats of cheap spraypack. Came up well and has held up pretty well for two years. Starting to chip away a bit recently, but not bad for $12.

I just washed it and wiped over with metho and then hit it with kill rust, No primer required. Scuffing it and putting down primer first is the propper way to do it but I'm an inpatient prick.

Here's my results, It took a few days for it to completly cure.

If you etch prime it, you dont have to re prime it. If it was a panel you may have to use spray putty to even out any high's or low's but that's getting a bit more technical for what you are doing.

Looking at this wondering if should paint mine black, its polished ecb big tube aluminum bull bar. Didnt mind it at first, but now to me kinda looks stupid.

Im trying to decrome my car started with the headlights they have gone black. Will leave the door handles though :)

I think it depends on the car. Take Dave's for example - black grill , wheels and flares, the only shiny thing on the front is the badge. Polished bar would look crap. Same with mine.

The XL7 on the other hand looks allright with the silver, especially since the wheels are similar. If you're going for a black-out 'theme' I understand, but do the wheels as well! (They do look kind of awesome black...)

Rob I reckon yours is a similar case - the two most obvious non-colour coded bits of the car are the bar and the rims. If they match, things look OK. When they don't it starts looking 'bitsy' and uncoordinated. (Black sunnies would look great with the grey paint too!)

Just my thoughts ;)

I think i may need to do a photoshop on my car and paint the wheels black... out camping in middle of the bush with no moon and had a few to drink the big blue Suzuki does a disappearing act and eventually punches you in the nose and balls when u stumble across it lol.

Could Chrome it up to the max! Chrome Rock Sliders, Chrome window seals, Chrome pin stripes, chrome snorkel, put back on my chrome lights, chrome the wheels, chrome grill and chrome dash.. would look the bomb and maybe some pink fluffy dice to finish it off.

As for the black rims, if you've got a side-on shot of yours to mash:
