hey guys, after finally getitng my gti motor all bolted into my sierra i have decided to try wire it up myself (its an mk1) .

started out by serperating the loom and getting rid off all the shit not needed which seemed preety straight forward. i then plugged in the remaining connectors that i still had (injectors and such) and hooked up my fuel pump through a relay and negative to the coil and hooked up appropriate earths and power ect.

now when i try start it, it cranks over and is getting spark but it seems like computer isnt switching the fuel pump on. if i spray abit of start ya bastard in it starts up (for like 2 seconds) but thats it. ive tried all sorts off different wiring and been through my diagrams over and over but cant sort it. its probably something stupid stoping it starting but it doing my head in at the moment

any ideas? or if anyone in perth wants beer or cash and wants to come have alook would be apreciated

thanks

Benn

Did you spray directly into the inlet manifold?

Power the pink wire that goes to the fuel pump . You can do that by jumping the socket .. white with green stripe to pink wire . This should operate the fuel pump....

Does the fuel pump run for 3 secs and then stop when you turn the ignition on?

Yeah...intake mainfold

I have major dramas once i did that....had to replace mine and reset the TPS etc before it would run ok again

Seems like your problem isn't the idle at the moment though

If it doesn't do this than you have wiring issues

You can go 1 step further to identify where the issue maybe.

Check the voltage on the ECU Pin out B13( Fuel pump ground.) 0-4v when pump runs Ie. 3 secs. then it should go to 12-14v when the pump stops.
The B plug is the 18 pin block. (Middle block) 4th pin on the top from the left looking at the back of the ecu.

This should confirm the ecu output is ok, then you may have to start looking at the relay operation.

if you havnt hooked up your fuel pump relay earth though the switching wire from the ecu it won't fire the injection.

The early models without spark control usually don't, they turn the pump on when an ignition feedback signal is received or when cranking.

Power from relay and back up power.
Ignition power

mk1 gti does!

X2

Well in my case running a 89 MK1 GTi ECU does.

It maybe the 12v Positive feed from the main relay.

Heres a simple schematic I followed when I did mine.

ok well iv have checked all my earths (again) and still no luck, getting spark when cranking but thats it.

iv used the same diagram as Dmac has above and i have done the following.

(these are the cables i have left after plugging in plugs left with connectors on them, injectors ect)

B D 2N 2P 2R = Earthed
F = Power straight to battery
W = To negative of coil
2H = To my new fuel pump relay

A/C AND 2Q/3B I have ran too a relay (5 pin) and are both switched (87 and 87A) from sierra ignition and using cable 2O as the relay earth
(as it looks to me in the diagram, main relay no.27)

Then i have teed off 2Q/3B to my fuel pump relay earth, 2H as the relay switch and then fuel pump active on 87 pin(fuel pump earthed to body and direct power off battery to terminals 30 on both relays)

that only leaves me with 3A (engine start switch signal) with i assume goes to sierra ignition ?

now i have wired it this way looking off my diagram but nothing happens, its probabley completely wrong :? have i done it back to front ? any help appreciated. have tried booking it in to auto sparky but their all 2-3 weeks away form looking at it and i really wanna drive it lol.

this is the diagram im working off , preety much the same as the above one

How did you setup your fuel system?
Which pump are you running?
Do you have a surge tank/lift pump etc?

3a , hard to tell from diagram , is a black with a yellow stripe ? then it should go to the solenoid wire of starter motor or to corresponding position on ignition loom

fuel pump is out of a feroza, iv mounted it near the fuel tank as close as possible and upgraded all lines including return lines with high pressure hose. no lifter pump or surge tank i was told i wouldnt need one with this pump ? only if i was going to run a vl fuel pump

3A is black and yellow stripe yeah,

havent had time to look at it the last few weeks but will check through them diagrams and see how i go.

cheers for you guys help.

Make sure you have the positive and negative correct
On the feroza, the black wire is actually positive and the white with the black stripe is the negative

probably unrelated, but AFAIK relays that have an 87 and 87a pin aren't double throw, i normally just have 2 pins marked 87. i've been caught out with that a few times myself... is it possible you've grabbed a relay that the 87a is getting power regardless, or that it powers one while switched on and the other while switched off?

maybe some relays do just mark one as 87 and one as 87a and still be double throw, but not with the ones i use...
