Hi everyone i have a few questions about a towbar for my 2012 jimny.

1)is it hard to fit one?
2)if fitting myself does the jimny have a plug near the back ready to have a trailer connection attached or would i need to run the electrics to make it work? I will be running an electric brake setup
3)whats the best place to buy towbars online or otherwise at a good price? would prefer a hayman reece style hitch setup so i can use as a recovery point aswell

Buy the factory one, should take around an hr to fit and comes with a plug and play loom

Hi I have just fitted a towbar to my 2007 Jimny (purchased from Repco $336) no problems it fitted up on the exhaust side without having to remove or undo anything I located the wiring loom under the passenger seat and tapped into it there, sliding the new wiring under the edge of the plastic panel on the rear passenger side. 1 extra meter of flex saved a lot of work compared to tapping into the loom at the rear of the vechicle

Is the factor one a removable hitch type or a tongue type bar? I got quoted 1000 for the genuine.

Removable hitch... $1000 isn't right... Ring a few dealerships, they will all differ in price

First quote I got when I bough mine was around 750ish... Drive half hour down the road and got it for $400 !

I just did a quick ring around of most of the perth dealers and chepest was $595. Im not to concerned with that price so ill ring a few aftermarket places but more than likely ill just go for it at that price. thanks timmy

Just got a Hayman Reese towbar for my 2009 Jimny at Westcott Towbars for $317 supplied.

Get in contact with any Hayman Reese dealers close to you, they'l be the cheapest. Any towbar anyone else sells if probably just a rebadged Hayman bar anyway.

For the 2009 Jimny I found it easiest to tap into the loom with a combination of two places:
1. behind the left rear wheel arch where you can pull out a rubber plug with the wiring, tap into the left and right indicators the push it all back in again to be protected from the elements.
2. behind the left upper rear tail light (2 screws to remove) to tap into the rest.

I did my 209 behind the left rear upper tail light. Plenty of room there. By the way the standard Jimny tow bar hitch receiver is 40mm x 40mm. I purchased the MIC offroad tow bar for a few hundred dollars and it has a 50mm x 50mm hitch receiver which takes the common recovery hitches. Not sure if they are still offering that tow bar though.

Hey guys Ended up getting one from westcott for $308. Fitted it all up this afternoon only thing left is the wiring. there was no wiring diagram with the wiring loom supplied so im assuming that the wires are colour coded to the stock vehicle wiring they are supposed to tap into?

I'm in Perth as well and looking at a tow bar. Bought my car new back in April and that's the last thing I want.... for now...

Was that an 'off the shelf' price? Or did that include some bartering?

Does it come with all mounting hardware (bolts etc) ?
Let me know what you end up doing with the wiring.... I think I'll be attempting this over the next couple of weeks if I can get a tow bar for that price.

Westcott in Welshpool. I just walked in and that was the price. Is yours a 2012 or earlier? The tow bar I got is actually an earlier model one that is the 1100kg one and has a patch in type wiring loom. The 2012 is a fair bit more expensive but from what I understand is exactly the same except the weight sticker and the loom is plug in. Everything is included in the kit and take and hour or so to fit.

Mine's a 2012 but pre-facelift... does that mean I must use the 2012 version?
I don't mind wiring it in manually instead of using a plug, it's not too hard. I guess just figuring out where to cut in.

I wouldn't mind saving a bit of money though so hopefully I can use the same tow bar as you.
One last question- is the bar you bought the type with the removable hitch, or the tongue type?

It's a removable hitch. The bar I got is pre facelift and min is the face lifted model. The only down side with the way I went is the towbar has a sticker saying its rated 1100kg instead of the 1300kg for the current one. That doesn't bother me as I won't be getting brakes so I'm limited to the I braked weight anyway.

i will be looking at doing my wiring on my jimny towbar tomorrow, started a bit today and its doing my head in. just wondering is there a wiring diagram or just some color codes for a "05 vvt jimny?

Plenty of wiring diagrams out there however some sites confuse which end is the socket and which is the plug and also there is more than one type of 7 pin round plug... bloody annoying. If you have a correctly wired trailer, the most reliable way to tell which wire is responsible for which light is to first test each pin on the trailer socket/plug with a 12V supply to see which light goes on. Then you will know 100% which pin (and thus which wire) on the car socket/plug is responsible for each light.
Now tap into the loom as per my previous post:

i think this is the one your talking about. i kinda used this one but it wasn't really much help except for where the wiring harness was and that was about it. i traced all the wires back to find which wires went where all basically the only ones i used this was the indicators. all the rest i had to do with a test light, glad i did as now mine is spot on.
