I just bought a 1994 Sierra, and am struggling to keep the speed up steep-ish hills (if you can call 70kph speed). I just don't want to cause road rage if you know what i mean.

I have read numerous discussions on engine upgrades, but I was wondering, how much extra I can get out of the stock standard setup? I would rather not spend the money on new engine (i can't do it myself, i have to pay someone and it wouldn't be cheap). I am very unlikely to do any serious offroading any time soon, just want to bring back that happy revving feeling to the engine.

Really appreciate any suggestions.

My 1.3 coily with nearly 200,000km since rebuild pushing 215/75R15 tyres can pull up Brisbane's Gateway bridges in top gear above the speed limit.

If you've just bought it have you checked wear of or adjustment of:
plugs
leads
distributor cap
ignition timing
air filter

etc...

When was the last time the vehicle was properly serviced?

Probably not in a long time.

Going for a service tomorrow, I will ask for big one. Good to hear that I can go up to 215/75 without issues.

check the cat converter isnt clogged up... replace plugs and leads etc... when my sierra was bog stock, running 215/75r15 road tyres and a 1.5" exhaust system it went off the speedo numerous times, even got a fine once to prove it. lol

There's something wrong with your car mate, if you've got standard size tyres then you shouldn't be losing any speed on all but the steepest of hills, let alone getting down to 70.

guys, you were all spot on. There was something wrong with the car.

i just spoke to the mechanic - car was operating on 3 cylinders (some hose fell off aparently). Can't wait to drive it all fixed up and tuned up. I'll report back tonight.

new spark plug and fuel filter, oil filter, new fuel hose, new gasket, tighten fan belt, degrease and lube

it's accelerating up the hill now.
