I pulled the factory flares off before doing my flares with garden edging, I used stainless bolts and in-set the garden edging a little bit then bolted it up under the arches.
I reckon it will get pulled off when I do hit a bank which I think will happen.
get as wide as you can because I have 10.5 tyres and I reckon it's only just wide enough to cover them.
IMO I think from the start you should engineer them so they can be easily removed when you go in the bush because like Gwagensteve said, it may cause damage to your car when they pull the bolts out.

I have garden edging it on mine and it always seems to pull the edging off the screws and the panel is fine ive hit a few banks and a gaurd rail doing 60 and hasnt bent my gaurds at all
