Hey Fellas,

I just filled my GV up 57L after doing 360kms :/ I didn't go offroad, just normal daily driving. Anyone know what would be causing my economy to be so shit? I don't really drive it with a lead foot. Everyone else seems to be getting around 450kms+ out of theirs :(

Cheers,

Gideon

pull the error codes & tell me if it's saying the o2 sensors are lazy.

search for error codes & posts by me, should find a few threads with the info on how to pull the codes & the list of what they mean.

it's also in the FSM that you downloaded when doing the heads.

I assume you are correcting for your tyre size? I know that's not going to change it much but it's worth mentioning.

could also be bad spark or dirty injectors? but you'd notice it sounding and acting funny then.

does the exhaust smell like unburnt fuel?

I found a bunch of codes you've posted, but how do I see the codes without a scanner tool?

Could be, but it's not missfiring and I can't smell anything :/

been using the A/C much? yours is auto from memory so that's going to chew more than a manual.

what sort of driving? highway? stop start? hills?

soooooooo many variables when comparing to someone else, so you really need to work out your previous economy & compare to that

There are so many variables as stated.
fuel type/quality. load. tyre pressures. drive type. service history. kms on motor and ancilleries. Speedo Accuracy. How its driven and by whom. Then there is the unknown.
a mate of mine was having irregular fuel returns. a month later he busted his younger brother swiping a 5 Litre Jerry from it for his lawn mower powered bike.
a slap across the head later his fuel consumption issues where gone. I think he also threw all his jocks and socks into the bin on pickup night but he won't say actually say he did.
I avoid it like the plague but E10 or Ethanol fuel could be playing havick with an aging lambda /O2 sensor/s and richening it up.
Sometimes a $50 or $80 ramp up on someonés dyno while measuring the O2 on the dyno unit tells the tale. And can point the right direction with out having to guess or chase codes and change shit thats still ok.
There are plenty of workshops with a dyno. Book it in and see whats coming out the tailpipe. lean/ fat or spot on.
I would average say 2 or 3 tanks before arriving at a figure.
If you are getting well under 400 putting around you have an issue worth identifying and fixing.
If your getting it when driving around an auto like Mark Webber everywhere on 20 PSI tyres whilst ferrying 4 heavyset islander mates to the local Macdonalds on a daily basis. well. you know.

As people have said, alot of variables, so need more info...
What type of fuel are you using ?
What tyre size ?
Does it take longer to start from cold ?
Is it a bit sluggish on the power sometimes ?
When was last service, and were plugs done ?
Is your clutch/auto ok, not slipping ?
Do you do alot of start stop driving ?
Is your air cleaner/filter dirty ?
Wheel bearings ok ?
Is your handbrake/wheel cylinders/brake pads ok, not getting stuck on ?

I drive with ac on all the time. Not a lot of start stop because most of my driving is at night, few hills.

Im running normal unleaded, i used to run E10. A few fillups ago I got 430kms or something.
Running 225/75r16 A/Ts

3000 ago?? I did plugs myself. Running NGKs. Might take it in for another service soon.

Dunno, how do i check?
I was thinking that because when i drive and take my foot off the accelerator i can feel it slow down dramatically. Dunno if thats normal with bigger tyres on though?

I thought my fuel economy was bad, but I was going by my odometre.
Allowing that I run 31.s and originals are 26,
my 360K was actually 430 real K

Are you measuring with a gps or odometre ?

Makes sense, haven't thought about that. I'm just using the dash ODO. I'll download an app on my phone and see how much difference it is.

Just tested the odo with GPS. Pretty much spot on. I do 55kms on speedo and its 60kms real which i knew already.

Buttttt... I found this. The hose must have come off at some stage and could be effecting it?!

The hose in red connects to the pipe on white.

Which connects to

It shouldn't chew that much though should it ? Pretty sure huxlee drives around with his A/C on and gets 450kms to the tank +/- His is manual though and has a roof basket on top.

Spot on with ODO and GPS. 1km = 1km. But it should work out as I'm doing 55kms when I actually do 60kms If I'm doing 60km/h. Correct??

try going for a decent drive, eg 10-100kms your GPS on your phone would be hard pressed to pick up the difference over 1km.

I have 225/70/16 on mine and at 91-92km/h on the ODO, I am REALLY travelling at around 100km/h. And at 100km/h on the ODO, I am REALLY travelling at around 110km/h.

This is pretty bad around 9% out according to tyre comparison websites. Even so, with mine (manual btw) I am getting 9.8L/100 and around 600km per tank (these are REAL figures - calculated with the 9% difference in mind - MATH teacher  ). I do have a K&N installed and snorkel, but I can't see these making a HUGE difference - the K&N made bugger all difference on my wifes Mazda SP23!!! :x

It looks like thats a return line, puts fuel back in tank, if carbon cannister fills up.
1 top pipe collects vapour from tank, mostly when parked.
1 pipe enables fumes turned into fuel to be used by engine.
1 is n overflow/pressure release.

I could be wrong on this interpretation.
But that is part of fuel system, so must have an effect.

I thought the hose out the bottom was a one way valve - it would allow the tank to draw in air to prevent it sucking closed, but not push vapour out into the engine bay.

Normally the hose on the bottom of the carbon canister just terminates, it's not connected to anything., that's if there is a hose connected at all.

That carbon can is the same one used in the baleno, and in that car the bottom barb doesn't have a hose.

The two hoses on the top are marked"purge" and "tank" normally.

600 to a tank, wow you must drive miss daisy! I cant see any of the V6's getting that.

@klutched there is something wrong there because my auto with aircon blazing and towing trailer will get 450 tank off my gps.

Being that the tube is part the front hubs unlocking system,
maybe the hubs were locked, and you were pushing all 4 wheels?
just a wild stab in the dark.

I would stop using standard unleaded right away, especially after E10, and use only Premium Unleaded... my mothers auto GV has run only Premium since she got it, she accidently put standard in last week, servo's have different pump/nozzle colours, and it run like shite... i also run some fuel system cleaner thru mine every 3rd refill, keep the injectors nice and clean, i use Flashlube, which is a lead replacement as well, its about $15 to $20 for one litre, but you only need 50mls per tank, so its pretty cheap in the long run, and good piece of mind...

Hmmm, shouldnt slow down dramatically, try jacking up each wheel, and turn it, if you hear scraping or squealing, the pads are touching the drum/disk, may just need an adjustment, or a wheel cylinder may be frozen/seized...

I am guessing you put that hose back on, so we will see if it makes any difference... :D

On the side of the airbox (firewall side) there is a square bit that sticks out. I think that hose you showed plugs into the bottom of that.
