hey all,
due to the missus upgrading her daily, my old jimny, i have recieved the keys back to this trusty old sled.
shes been running it as a daily for a while while ive been playing with other autos, and in the meantime the old jimnys racked up many a KM.

motor is currently at about 180000KM, and getting a little smokey on start up and rear main is looking pretty sad.
this is the OG jimny, running the oh so powerful single cam 1.3.
so options are either freshen up the head and general gasket/tidy up, or check out motor upgrades

motor swap is ideal, as i want to go a little bigger as far as lift any tyres go.
its currently running a OME 2inch lift and 215's.
thinking of putting in a body lift and going some 235's or slightly bigger.

so here come the idiot questions

-as im running a single cam motor, can i use a twincam replacement block (m15a) in the jimny and retain the stock ECU/manifolds, injectors etc?
if my ECU wont run the twin cam, does this mean that my only option for motor upgrade is the 1.6 single cam, or other options??


-if 1.6 is the option i have, will this extra displacement be enough to counteract the bigger tyres on stock gearing? or will i still need to look at reduction gears??

-what other bits will i need to retain for 1.6 motor swap if thats the case?
ie ECU, manifolds, injectors, etc



any help in regards to the matter would be much appreciated!

The M and G are totally different motors.

g13bb upgrade will be a g16b

M13a upgrade will be a m15/16/18

I'd look at using a Baleno g16b block with jim head and sensors etc, or block and head, and adapt with jimny sensors
But for the M motor, I'm not sure exactly but i think they would use same sensors/plugs on each one, and then use m13a ecu unless you like playing with wiring for the m18a etc ecu Have seen its just a pin swap in the existing ecu plugs, but will need a ecu pinout/diagram for sure.

in Nsw, a 200cc upgrade is allowed with direct bolt in motors, after that, the car needs engineering for rego's. We have yearly inspections so it kinda has to be done unless you get a dodgy inspector. In SA you should be fine with no inspections

Don't get too hung up on the "single cam" thing. The SOHC 16V head flows more gas than the wide angle, DOHC GTi head.

Yes, a G16 bottom end swap is your only real option. Toy will pick up quite a bit of torque and some HP.

Displacement doesn't really offset bigger tyres, that's what gearing is for, but the G16 will offset the gearing issues larger tyres cause a bit due to its longer stroke.

looks like ill be doing the math, and seeing what the poor uni student bank account can afford,
definatenly not reduction gears ATM, so heres hoping that a few extra CC will give us enough power to spin some bigger rubber.
