Hey everyone,

What do you all use for navigating around? hard copy maps? gps with topo maps loaded? im about to start trekking further afield from home and I am starting to look for an easy way of navigating around.

I have a cheapy ebay windows ce gps with OZIexplorer loaded on.
Always have paper maps as back up.
I have the gps that comes with android phone, too, as a back up.

i live by the rule, if you took the left turn at the last intersection you have to take the right at the next & always check out no-through roads.

I have done a bit of remote traveling and just look at google earth pics before i leave and then use guess work. Makes it a bit more exciting.

yep 100%, i find that you tend to notice & see a whole heap more as you're looking at where you're going rather than... in 56kms take the next left.




in 50kms take the next left.







in 25kms take the next left.







in 5kms take the next left.






i use my gps mainly to be able to see where i've been & being able to upload it to google earth is always cool.

It can be a bit worrying when ya haven't seen anything ya recognize for a day or so and have used 6 of the 10 jerrycans that ya have.

i'm still running my garmin nuvi - i still take it to the powerlines as well, even though i know the track well, its proven handy a few times in finding tracks off to the side (using the topography maps).

they're also VERY handy when you're doing a night run and the track looks WAY different at night, its a good visual confirmation of where you're at and what's ahead of you.

Get a fairly cheap or second hand Tablet with GPS. I prefer Samsung anything..
Get the HEMA Maps for where your planning on navigating. Or package deal the lot. Seems expensive to package but there good things to have.
The detail in some of the maps are awsome.
A good quality Holder from some one like Ram Mount in the U.S and USB charging cabability for it onboard.

it really isnt... so long as you're "ok" at using a computer you can basically do anything to customise your GPS... but the garmin nuvi model comes with street maps, then you just buy a micro SD card to jam in the side of it and you get the topographic maps instantly. You don't ever need to use a computer at all (other than to back up your waypoints etc but even thats not necessary).

i dont know about the unit you posted, but i love my 3760: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=401&pID=92337 (i bought mine in-store cheaper than i could get it online).

then buy this: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID ... pvID=83501 (you can get them cheaper from other places than direct through garmin).

and you get topo maps of australia and new zealand, and it still does street navigation on those maps too.

it will navigate tracks if you put waypoints in manually, then name the waypoints "Left 1" "Right 1" Right 2" etc... i've done this and it was very successful in navigating me through a maze of gravel roads - plus because i could see the road ahead i could choose appropriate speeds for upcoming corners i wouldnt otherwise have known about (likewise for going faster on long straights). They all do a "breadcrumb trail" as well, so it draws a line where you've been - so if you get lost you can just follow your trail back out.

I looked at oztopo and garmin's own topo aus & nz and opted to go with the garmin product because i trusted it more... you can "get" it for free here too: http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/7819788/ ... 4_UNLOCKED

But it takes some nerdery to get it working on the device (i've just done this with my road maps cos i'm stingy and didnt want to pay $99).

I'm very happy with my garmin nuvi 3760, with garmin topo off of ebay for $50. Great unit, can keep updating software when plugging it into the computer on mygarmin. Even when running topo around the burbs, its basically the same as the normal road maps.

Just Got Ozi on my Nav unit in the car found one waterfall, was too hard to use, kinda a ok reference but kept going back to Igo which i have in offroad mode, records everywhere i go and had some decent tracks and often takes me on some interesting dirt roads as shortcuts, and lots of WTF where is it taking me? but knocks off 40 or more ks from the trip

I like the new Alpine 4x4 Nav but at $2100 it will never be in my car.

Just updated my GPS with the latest sensis maps.
Was surprised it included speed cams and other stuff.
Was available today, and I was first to download.
Good fluke. But no prises tho
While I was at it, checked OZI Explorere CE
it has an update available now, so did that, too.
Its getting ready for OZXF4? formatt, but still works with 2 and 3

Updated mobile phone,
and made back ups to Gps/ozi and mobile while I was in a techy mood

i downloaded memory map for my iphone and it seems ok with the free maps on it. only thing is there is no topo upgrade map for wa it seemed.

I downloaded 2013Q1 maps last year before trip to victoria, Christmas holidays, what version did you download?, has quite a bit in it, even had some Track names, might not display the whole track but at least i could find them, as Ozi and hema in the end only showed them as Way Points.

Updated Ozi on phone, see no real differences, soon to do GPS

Well I ended up buying a hema navigator preloaded with 1:100k topo aswell as the standard maps at the caravan show.

$640. So far initial impression is very good. Seems good quality. Good screen size and resolution. Pretty easy to use. Use ozi explorer. As part of the show deal I got the sun visor, additional 1:100k mapping of wa aswell as standard hema 1:250 and it includes 2 hours of training.
