Hi everybody,
I'm thinking of getting a new jimny (in Darwin) with the sole purpose of having a cheap daily drive and doing some light off-roading from time to time. Do you think getting a newbie may be a bad (or good) idea and why?
Just seeking some wisdom from the forum, there's not much in the way of second hand ones around for a good price and don't want to have reliability issues etc.
Also would be looking at (slowly) adding some mods maybe a rear air locker and 2" lift kit.
The deal here at the moment is still get the extended 5yr warranty and a 1000$ ARB voucher + driveaway for $18,999.00
Any ideas/comments appreciated
Cheers

MrRocky on here had his heart set on a jimny and then test drove a SWB GV and fell in love with it... perhaps you should test drive both youself to see what suits better.
The Jimny will be way easier to modify compared to the GV though.

That is a good price for the Jimny. No ESC means it can't be registered in some other states so if this matters to you check that out first. They are easy to modify but the GV will be more comfortable and does have a little more space as well.

Thanks for reply's people, those SWB Vitara's are appealing but thinking I'll go new Jimny for the future mod potential. Good to know the Xrox bar will be there to compare against the ARB ones if they actually get released (in design stage apparently)
Will seek out some answers from ARB this week as to the availability/compatibility of 2" lifts and rear lockers for the new jimny's, Suzuki couldn't answer as to whether there were any warranty issues with these mods yet and they are looking into it but surely this would be fine.
I'm having alot of fun reading through the posts in this forum, any new Jimny information/pics feel free to post here !!!
Cheers

21,000 ks on your 2013 model! She's been a busy little Suzi. Any warranty issues with the locker and what sort of rust protection is it?
I to am a little worried now if the 2013 models are hitting the market used already, its only just turned April.
Cheers

i wouldnt worry to much mate, many people buy cars and change their mind before the first oil change. just get it and enjoy it.
^^ 21000 km on a 2013 model??? you sure? illegal taxi? so you do 7000km a month? assuming you bought it on the 1st of January, and potentially off the road for 5 weeks with a coil pack problem??? thats a absolute phenomenal amount of kms.
what toyata are you getting? not many 4wd new yotas that are in the price range of a jimny, i wanted a 79 series cruiser, than i weighed up my options, and i could get 3 modded jimnys or 1 cruiser.

A lot of people buy one thinking its big enough for their needs then realise how small they really are and sell up to get something bigger (like a GV3 lol)
I've driven a jimny myself and i reckon theyre smaller inside than a sierra? Could just be all the plastics etc creeping into the interior space making it feel that way though.

really depends how much room you need mate. We have had ours for about 6 months now and because its just me and the lady we dont have any space issues, it fits in the small area of our garage left after my bike and workshop area and gets us pretty well everywhere we could want to go all using about 7-8l/100 depending how its driven and thats with slightly bigger than stock muddies (215/75/15) and its an auto. We have had 4 adults in the car comfortably enough for runs around town but most of the time we leave the back seats out and can get plenty of stuff in the back. Im not that tall(~5'10) but i like my leg room and most of the time in things like my work camry.falcon, prado etc i have the seat either all the way back or most of the way back and find the jimny has enough leg room for me with just two of us in the car. with passengers in the back it gets a bit cramped upfront. to date we have done about 19,000kms and havent had one issue with reliability. On the highway she is SLOW!! but will keep the speed limit for the most part and sit on a shade over 3k rpm at 110kph. My only complaint thus far has been a lack of bull bar but thats been sorted so onwards and upwards!

I bought my Jimny soft top 11 years ago in Darwin. Mitsubishi motors Stuart park. Drove it down south to nsw in 2008. Travelled with 2 dogs. Took out the back seats. Makes a good little 4wd ute. Bit slow going up big hills in the mountains but top car. Easy to park & reliable off road. Do they still offer soft top - convertible Jimny in 2013? Seem to be rare.

Well now I'm thoroughly confused re bullbar. Opposite lock just called the xrox people who told him they have a bar but it needs to be test fit as they haven't been able to test for it to the new jimny so as yet is still unavailable

It's funny, 1.3l Sierras and Jimnys always feel really claustrophobic to me, where as steel dash 1ls and LJs feel like they have acres more room. No plastic needlessly invading your space! They forgot about knee room when they went to G motors. Though as much as I hate to admit it, some days I wish I had the luxury of a plastic dash with mod cons like air vents and a stereo!

That jimny with the xrox bar has obviously been modified to fit the newer style

I noticed the same thing hopping into my mates Jim after my sierra. I think the bulkier dash and door trims add to that feel

My understanding is that they can be registered in Victoria after being registered in another state/territory for at least 12 months. Cheers

Is it that they cant be registered or cant be sold new? I think vic wont let them be sold new by dealerships because they dont have ESC but they would be bloody hard pressed to ban any second hand or existing car without ESC from being brought into the state and registered there.

Can't remember where I read it but I did read that new jimnys may not be registered in Vic, and to register a post 2011 Jimny it must have been registered for at least 12 months in another state/territory first. Apologies if I'm wrong on this, hopefully someone may have verified info on this? Cheers

I'd put money on it it that most people test drive the jimny and think "This is a fun little car" buy one then after a month the novelty wears off.
