Hi all.
Wanting advice on what people have done with sierras running EFI engines.
I am going to be installing a G16B with a custom turbo setup in the next month or so. I bought it complete with EMS computer that runs a single point injection throttle body.
What have people done with the fuel tanks???
I was wanting to run a surge tank but regardless if I do or not I'm going to need a lift pump feed and a return that my sierra tank won't accommodate.
Is there a bolt in or similar tank from a jimny/vitara that will work?

thanks guys.
Russ.

The neatest setup is a tank from a coily sierra which can be hard to find. This will bolt in directly onto the existing fuel tank mounts. You can then bolt in the pump/pickup/top flange from a vitara into the top of the tank. I havent started my EFI conversion yet but I will be doing it this way.

As above, coily tank with an uprated pump like a wahlbro to suit.
I run a facet style lift pump to a surge tank and a bosche 044 with mine, mainly because I wanted more fuel capacity than the coily tank offered and have space under the tray for any style of surge tank.

Cool thanks guys. See how I go finding one. heaps of room for a surgy under there with a body lift. Just the tank setup I was wondering about. Why a vitara pump/pickup/sender?

A coily tank has the same flange in the top as a vitara tank. I think I read somewhere that a baleno one was similar but the hose needed to be lengthened. A coily uses a mechanical fuel pump so its just a hose to the tank. If you bolt the vitara setup to the flange its already setup for EFI, no surge tank or anything else required. All you will need to do if you need more fuel than the vitara pump can supply is swap the intank pump for an uprated one like a walbro or something.

So the coily, even though it's EFI still uses mechanical pump? Walboro in tanks are cheap so prob the go.

The coily is carby. But is a different tank to a leaf Sierra. The top of a coily tank is the same as a vitara one which is why the vitara setup bolts in.

doesn't the coily tank also have a bit of a swirl pot in the bottom of it for the pump pickup?

Yes the coily tank has the swirl pot.
The Vitara pump (SWB I think) bolts into the tank but the pickup length requires adjustment and the fittings are pointing in the wrong direction.
The Maruti pump is the best option, or the Samurai pump from the US. Both are harder to find then the coily tanks.

So it's not like a 6 or 8 bolt pattern where it can just be rotated? Pickup needs to be longer? Doesn't sound that dificult, I'll prob by a vitara pickup 2nd hand as I'll be going walboro or something for more flow and lower with a bracket if required.

No, the pattern looks like it would allow the pickup to be rotated but it can't. It'll only go in one way.

This is what I had on my GTI sierra. Facit pump to a eBay surge tank with a 044 type efi pump. Was a simple fix, cost less then $200 and worked perfectly.

ive done the same style setup in my corolla i converted to EFI.

Though i bought a small surge tank off ebay (700ml) that i mounted under the car, and i used an internal life pump out of a VL commodore, as well as the external pump from the vl commodor (bosch 037 i think). I hacked up my fuel pickup a bit to take the lift pump and the lift pump wiring.

Its not that complicated, just have to know where which pipe goes.

The internal lift pump came with a filter sock attached to it in my case.

Is a facit pump the one that ticks like crazy? That's what I've got on mine running NA G16 engine (No mechanical fuel pump). Pretty annoying. I was gunna get the same surge tank off ebay. Nice and compact. I'm happy with how to do the plumbing of surge etc, it was only the fact that stock sierra tank doesn't have provision for a return.
Maybe I could just braze a return fitting onto the tank? Just used the little ticker pump as a lift pump and then run.

Does that surge tank only have 3 fittings? Not designed for rail return AND tank return?
Edit: Just read the ebay add says 3 x 8mm fittings and 1 x 13mm so a 4th fitting must be hiding on the pic.

This is my favourite little diagram for custom surge tanks.

Image

It doesnt show filters, so you either have a lower pressure filter on the suction side of the lift pump, or a high pressure filter just before the fuel rail.

Also it doesnt show the breather on the tank, a carby fuel tank shoudl have 3 ports, feed, return, and breather.

Ideally something like a 100 micron before the lift pump and an EFI rated 10 micron after the high pressure pump.

Is there another pump the same physical size as an 044 that will fit in the ebay surgie pictured above but not as much flow. An 044 seems overkill for this application. I have a skyline on E85 running 330rwkw that uses an 044 haha.
Maybe the 070?

http://www.bosch.com.au/content/languag ... lpumps.pdf

take your pick, they are all pretty much the same size (external ones)

I used a 911, and it was pretty much same size as 044.

044 is way over kill for even a small turbo engine.

edit: sorry re tube bender, got my ctrl C's and ctrl V's mixed up!

Thought I'd post an update on what I ended up doing. Bought the surge tank of eBay. Cost about $130 or so by the time it was delivered. I re-used the low pressure 'facit' pump I had already as a lift pump and went with a VL 070 copy for about $60 as the pressure pump.
Used the standard feed line on the chassis that was carby supply line and used the charcoal canister (tank breather) as a return to the surgie from the pressure reg. There was provision for a tank return on a very tiny port on top of the standard tank. Seems to work ok at this stage.
Here's a few pics.
