Hi guys,

I just picked up a cheap bunky for a daily drive till my other rig is finished with its heart transplant.

It's an '89 swb that was the aqua/green colour but its been (badly) sprayed Matt black. The paint has adhered well so no chance of removal ; (

Anyway to make it less cop bait I want to paint it. Has anyone used wattyl Killrust topcoat for there car? Is it strong against chips and the like? Any fading?

I painted a trailer it came up good a few years back.

Or can someone sugest a cheap alternative?

loose the thing on the front.. and go grab a box of Fiddly bits white from bunnings and while your in there, grab a roll or two of 2" masking tape.. and a clear drop sheet or two....

if you want to be REAL fancy... give it a wash n quick rub with 800 or 1000g sandpaper prior to masking it up..

Yep cheap $2 foam roller and do it on a hot day I have even heated the paint can up with a heat gun before!

i'd spray it & spend 1/8th of the time rubbing it back, fuck using a roller... just ask che_guitarra, he read the same threads about rustoleum & roller paint job & the 2nd time round i'm certain he sprayed it.


this was a quick can job i did the other week on the roof spoiler.

This is my old NT I did with those "export" cans from supercheap, stuck quite well after prepping with 320-400, used about 5 cans I think, Very cheap option if you go out bush heaps

Personally I would never do a rattle can paint job, except small touch ups or small bits like a mirror. It can be quite hard to get a finish than even.

If you can get access to a compressor then a spray gun from supercheap and proper paint will give you a much better and more durable result. Most of those cheap spray cans are not uv stabilised so the paint will fade and go chalky over time. Most people including myself on here for a cheap respray use protec camouflage enamel. It only comes in limited colours but is idiot proof. Mine was done with a heavy rub with a scotch pad, prepsol then spray. That's it. Can also get it in 400gm rattle cans for about $12ea for touch ups. Still looks good over 6 months later, couple of scratches but none is flaking off or anything. It's $50 for 4 litres which was enough for my whole sierra. It's much more economical to buy it in a tin, rattle cans have a lot of thinner tools it spray. Here's a pic of mine a week after I did it, cost was under $100 including spray gun, already had compressor.

depends how enthusiasic you wanna get.

Ive done a car properly in acrylic paint, took 1 week to prep. about 2hrs to paint it.

And around ~$300 in paint and materials. (had a compresor already)

Id do it again, but id do more coats of putty primer and sand it back. although my paint came out like a mirror finish and the colour had really awesome depth to it, the surface was still a bit bumpy.

I did mine with some White Knight colourbond touch up paint. Gave it a light rub with some 600 grit first.



That was straight over camo pink and only took 4 1/2 cans. Cost about 60-70 bucks all up

Hi I thought I replied to this thread... Woops.

Anywho thanks for the replies, for lack of a place to do this properly and the timeframe I ended up just doing it with White Knight Rust Guard in the Marine Blue. Came out ok with a sand down with some 400 and wax and grease remover first.

I Appriciate the input and when I do it next time I will be stripping it down to a shell and going the full hog, but this looks better than Matt black...
