I have both in my parts box.

Have been thinking on putting the 1.6l carby hat on my soon to be rebuilt Lwb Suzuki sierra 85ci small-block (<= Armsup )

Mainly cause it will create enough space for a 2nd 50cal ammo can or storage tray (or even a future 2nd small battery?).
cabin storage space isn't exactly a problem in LWB I do like to carry spare belts, bulb, hoses, fluids etc under the bonnet & out of the way.

I believe the sierra air filter wins out in total filtration surface area over the vitara.
Will the difference be enough that at 4500rpm the vitara will actually be suffocating airflow over the sierra one or its just the sierra will take much longer to clog up so less frequent service periods for same performance

my carby vit doesnt choke up at higher rpm, so for breathability i doubt you would run into problems, though i dont think its a great design if you want to take it severely offroad requireing a snorkle cos indoubt the hat would seal so well

This has got me thinking..... about the opposite of your idea. I've got a 1.3 carby, that will be re-jetted to suit my G16A, and I thought maybe a 1.3 air box would work better

To be honest the car isn't going to see anything that is remotely 'severe'. I'm too soft. If its deeper than my knees I probably wont be crossing it.
I guess I just need to test both

Scrawn: that's the first time I've heard of someone ditching a mikuni in favour of a aisin for a vitara!
What I can say is the aisin barrels are slightly smaller (like 1mm each from memory)

In any event if you can get a Single-point EFI 'hat+pipe' and run it to the passenger side like suzuki sidekick/trackers it might be better. I think I have said pipe and a baleno airfilter that I can sell you too as at one stage I was considering doing something similar in my SWB sierra.
