I own a 2012 lancer and the misses drove out the driveway and got cleaned up by another car, it looks like a chassis has been bent and the smash repair bloke said its all good he has jig that will straighten it out.... Metal that has been bent then bent back is weaker is it not? So how could this be legal? And do I get a day in writting it off?

Pictures make it look better then what
It is

Plenty of cars get pulled straight on chassis jigs. Let the insurance assessor make the call.

But wouldn't it be weaker? The misses is the main driver with my 13 month old daughter in it with her so if it isn't going to be the same strength I'm not going to accept it

And it will show up on a revs check that it has been in an accident won't it?

Unfortunately it is the insurance companies assessor that makes the call.

Its certainly a mess thats for sure, but yer when it comes to insurance they make the calls.

I'd be wanting a new one though.

So long as its not written off i dont belive it appears on any crashed lists.

Work hardened. But more brittle.

Yes has fatigued, may be repairable, if you can speak to the assessor directly though remember who's paying him.

Should have thrown open both doors making sure they were damaged, broke the dash where the missus hit it with her knees, cracked the windscreen. Just enough for the cost to outweigh replacement.

It'll straighten fine and you'll never know the difference. That damage is fairly minimal BTW

Lancers don't have a Chassis.

Wife got T'boned in her Gv. It was hard enough to buckle a rim, Bend a front strut and control arm and break a front door hinge. The A pillar and front drivers wheel took the full force of the impact and I was sure they would write it off. Not a lot of serious panel damage but the a pillar was damaged..... but they repaired it and you can hardly tell except for the socket marks on the Guard bolts under the bonnet.

Yours looks cosmetic in comparison.

x 400

sam if you think that's bad, don't go into a crash shop. 8O

they'll bung it on the "car o liner" chassis jig & pull that shit straight, pretty sure the new ones are even computer controlled. as b4t said, you'll be hard pressed to notice the difference & if you're unhappy sell it on but i'd be raising your concerns with the insurance assessor in the first instance.

Well, technically they do but I'm not going to split hairs over it.

It'll be good as new once it's fixed

No they have a sub frame that's built into the body of the car that the motor and drivelling bolts to.

monocoque body structure would be a more accurate term IMO... there is no chassis as such.

Mate that's fairly light damage. I'm a panelbeater by trade, every car has a chassis be it monocoque or separate, monocoque just has the chassis integrated into the body'shell. If you have no chassis the car won't be rigid enough.
Anyway back on topic, its mostly cosmetic panel damage, but IMO they will replace the whole front right corner suspension components and do a wheel alignment ,probably measure the chassis to see if its moved,it may be pushed over to the passenger side slightly but nothing to be scared of. Very straightforward to pull back.

Even if they do re-align the chassis and fix all the panels.. They never seem to drive the same again..

If they repair it.. Sell it.. Get her another car..

I'll look out for body lifts for lancers then. In a monocoque vehicle, the "chassis" is as much the roof or doors as it is the floor.

For the OP- if the car isn't written of by the insurance company then the repairs will be guaranteed. The car won't be significantly weakened or unsafe. Jigging of monocoques is a well established technique. If the repair couldn't be completed in a way that strength was compromised, the car would be written off. In fact, I'm quite sure tht many cars that could be safely repaired are written off because the insurance company is inherently conservative.

If you look at the pic atari put up, looking at the blue section at the front.
Its easier to spot on the drivers side the rail (box section) running from the front to the bulkhead, thats the chassis leg and it continues on both sides of the car under the floor panel, often stopping where it meets just under the rear seats, where it will meet a big cross member running the width of the car, this allows space for the fuel tank to sit nicely up there tucked away. Then the chassis legs continue to the back of the car under the boot floor panel.
Its really easy to see when a car is up in the air on a hoist.

Sam as for your car,
now i can see it on a full size screen rather than the ipad, its hit your car high up,probably missing the chassis, but i can see its damaged the front inner wing and headlamp panel, and because its hit the bonnet from the side, its pushed the bonnet over to the passenger side hitting the left front wing,so thats why the passenger door is rubbing against the wing.
So the top sections that your front wings (you call them front guards?) bolt to may have moved to the passenger side.
It may require a small pull but its not bent/twisted/etc, a pretty easy repair.

I'd put $$ on that being written off.
Whole front end has shifted to passengers side, sure it's fixable but I bet they don't.

X2.

Of course, they could just elect to put a new chassis under it. D

that will repair up just fine, and its is only fairly minor damage in the scheme of things. engines and trans though firewalls, rollovers etc are major damage and still fixable and safe
if the repairer deems it necessary they will just order the damaged sections and drill out the spot welds and replace the whole damaged piece. all the pieces are available from Mitsubishi
and as stated above they don't actually run a chassis as such and even if they did that damage is confined mainly to the front suspension skirt/tower not the actual rail.
once repaired it should be as good and maybe even straighter than Mitsubishi made the chunck of shit particularly if its jigged. factory tolerances are 3-5mm of square on most jap cars

id not be worried about the safety of the vehicle , my wife and kids spend the over 20 years driving fixed repairable write offs and I have sold cars to friends that are still driving them after 200,000+kms
