Hi Guys,

1991, Vitrara JLX SWB Carby Hard top. Standard Stock no Mods - Tyre Placard inside Door reates tyres at 205/75/15 as standard.

Rang a few tyres places. Currently running a Goodyear road tyre in 205/70/15. Rims are 15x5.5.

I am looking for a decent all terrain preferbly no more than $200 as i am palnning on getting an updated Jimny next year so no point spending big bucks on tyres thet are worth more than the car.

The tyre bloke near my work reckons there is no way id get 235/75/15 on them and would be hesitant to put 215/75/15 on them due to compliance and road worthyness. He also says my speedo will go out going bigger.

Basically can someone cut the crap and tell me what will fit on my car and what is a tyre i should look at? Was looking Maxxis 751 for $180 each. Or federal coragia AT in 215/75/15 or Kumho KL87 I think they are. Some bloke even recomended GripMax 215/75/15 for $140 a tyre in AT.

I dont do any serioius 4WD just mainly do a fair bit of hunting so driving through paddocks and driving dirt roads etc.

Any tips so I am not being sold a load of bullS**T?

215 will fit fine. 235 is a stretch and I wouldn't recommend it. It has been done though.

Why not swap your tyres onto the jimny when you get that?

In my experience tyre shops dont like installing tyres that are very different to the tyre placard, probably from a litigation point of view. You can just take your wheels down in your mates car and get them fitted. They cant argue if you tell them to put tyres on wheels and not fit them to a car.

I was eyeing off those "gripmax" tyres. maybe you can get them and tell me if they are any good.

Your current 205/70R15 are actually slightly undersize!

A '91 Vit has 205/75R15 standard so a 215/75R15 only equates to less than 15mm larger diameter over standard. Even under the old QLD tyre laws which were very strict - this was legal.

The stock standard Vits I have seen with 235/75R15 tyres fitted had a bit of minor scrubbing happening.

IMO stuff an A/T - just get some M/Ts and call it done.

215/75's on a 5.5 inch rim is fine.

The only concern a tyre shop should have is that the replacement tyre exceeds the load index as stated on the placard.
Speed rating is a factor, but if retreads are permitted, and they only have a 120 speed rating, almost any new tyre will exceed that.

Your speed will be out, but thats your problem, not theirs.

I do want some decent A/T tyres for it so put on it and make them a bit chuinkier. Whats on there now is emabarrassing

This car is my daily driver as well? Will this affect anything? Really noisy? Quick Tyre wear? I have a long hunting trip away at the end of november for 2 weeks and driving 8 hours each way plus driving when we are there. I dont want to be killing myself by the end of the trip because of road noise?.

Also which manufacturers sell 215/75/15 in Mud Terrains? Federal or Grip Max dont seem to have that size?

I run Hankook Dynapro MT RT03 on my Sierra, and BFG Mud Terrains (old pattern) on my Vitara - both in 215/75R15. Both are driven daily. I drove my vitara on BFG MTs from Brisbane to Perth and back earlier this year and didn't go crazy due to noise. Both sets of tyres handle OK (I have driven on much worse older design MT tyres) and don't wear as bad as if they were fitted to a heavier vehicle. Both sets (of 5) were purchased secondhand at about 1/3rd worn and I've put at least 25,000km on each set and both still have good tread.

I agree, I went AT's first and regretted it.

I dd bighorns on a 3t ute. i have 80k on them
mostly high way driving . its got a bit of a hum but no worse then all the other noises in the car

i wouldn't evey buy at again

I like my Hankook MTs in 215/75. Not an aggressive MT and not at all noisy on road.

For this ^^^....a decent quality A/T tyre would be my choice. Look for a tyre with a more squarer edge for a lot of dirt road use. As much as I think the BFG A/T is a c$#% of a road tyre, they are a good dirt road tyre.

That said, my Sierra has Bighorns and the Rangie has Kumho KL71's (sometimes), both are good on dirt roads and reasonable on the tar. Maxxis 771's A/T's also work well on the dirt roads, are good onroad and may suit if available in the size you require.
