I picked up a Nicely worked up 99 Jimmy to give me more comfort and better city driving then my sierra but I have worked out a few problems.
After a recent long distance drive I found that the 1.3 is thirsty for its size, due to the gearing to maintain 90kph I had to sit on 4000rpm and the 5th doesn't run so you have to keep the rev's up to maintain speed even down hills.
The tank is too small, probably have to get a custom made up. I also feel the power is to far up the rev range.

Solutions I have been thinking about are custom tank, mid range cam shaft, putting a standard box back in and maybe having it bored out to 1.5lt.

I would like to keep the costs to around $5000

I have also thought about either a supercharger or diesel conversion but their both very costly and problematic.

I have been searching out various options but would like to hear a few thoughts that other people have tried or seen that might help me get the results im after.

What does it have now?

I would start with a g16b. Anything you do with the 1.3L... Its still a 1.3L A decent g16b will be your simplest and biggest bang for buck upgrade.

If you want more and have the skills, an m18a could be done.

Crawler t/f case, reduction box (don't know the gearing) front and rear arb lockers, custom exhaust, 235/75 r15's, 120amp alternator, snorkel and its was converted from auto to manual.

There are a bunch of unrelated upgrades to suspension, lines, lighting etc but otherwise its a standard g13bb that's done 140,000km and 15,000 since rebuild.

As a side note, I have a g16a with a 32/36 Webber in my other sierra and I'm very happy with the power in it although its gearing makes it just as low and high revving and the suspension is harsh on road.

I do need it reliable and really need more power then speed for towing a reasonably heavy trailer long distance.
I do like the g13bb and if I could give it a bit more grunt and lower the peak torque then it would suit me perfectly with the standard box and a less restrictive 5th gear.

I found the 1.6 has given me quiet a considerable ammount of low down torque but i did have 290xxx km 1.3 that had an ugly cam gear keyway and oil leaks. Just a bit of a waste as your 1.3 has had a rebuild though

non-vvt jimnys as standard (factory driveline and the factory 205/70/r15 tyres) they do 4000-4200rpms @ 100km/h so yours sounds about right having 235's. Taking out the crawler box for a factory one you will end up with less revs, but way less power too...

If it isn't revving at 4000rpm @ 100kph then it will never have power or be very good on fuel

That's sort of why I was leaning towards a mid range cam shaft to make more of the power it has more usable. Its supposed to be simple to as the cam is very easy to access and the only other requirement is to tweak the computer a bit.
I have also found out that a really good way to gain a little extra low down torque is to fit a g16b throttle body to the g13bb engine, as the manifold has a 45mm hole but the stock throttle body has a 40mm one, the g16b's is 45mm so it mates better and hives it more air.

It does chew oil on long trips, after doing 17 hours at around 4000rpm it chewed almost 1lt of oil. But that was a lot of work on a little engine.

Then again a low km engine might make me a decent slice back if I sell it.

i'm with the guy that suggested the 1.6... with the G13bb motor, you can bolt the 1.6 bottom end right on, but it has to come from a g16b (efi model) as they have dished pistons... if you dont do that it will be smash city.

Then just add the 1.6's injectors and the relevant adaptor plates/mount (are they necessary for jimny? they are for sierra...) and you're away.

Ill have to update my thread, got plenty of pics of it all except the sump mods , but there easy, its all easy. Used a vitara 16v bottom end in mine. Jimny head and cam ect. Also yes the cam is very easy to get to. Just the timing cover is a pain to remove to ensure your timing is all correct. We tried to reassemble the 1.3 without playing with the cover ad ended up around 180degrees out, luckily the motor isn't an interference fit with the pistons and valves

Down the track when I get the large amount of spare coin needed I intend on putting in a TD, but until then I guess I just want to tweak this engine a bit more to make its power more useable to me.
I might have to give up anymore speed so I don't loose off road capability, I might have to put standard rims on when I'm in town that should help a bit there.
But if I can't tweak much more out of it as is then I will focus on Range instead.
Anyone know a place in Brisbane where I can get a bigger tank made?
I would also like a light low fitting roof rack and some custom draws.

You can fix your issues for under a grand by having the correct gearing. Adding power doesn't adequately compensate for shit gearing. My jimny has 30x9.5 tyres and still gets a genuine 12L per 100km while towing 600kg at 100kph all on the stock motor but with around 30% gearing reduction.

Suzuki engines love to rev so dont be afraid of having lower gearing.

I think the main problem in having on the highway is the 5th gear, not being an overdrive it just sucks having to push it all the time and not being able to let it coast.

So looking online, talking with mechanic mates and things done on past vehicles.

1, put a 1.6 vitara throttle body on it.
2, remove the thermo fan and put an electric fan on it.
3, get the cam reground to to give it more at lower rev's

That should give it a bit more grunt and better response.

Might see if I can track down some 8mm leads, good plugs, and maybe a mild port/polish on the head to clean it up a bit as I can get that done at work.

Might start another thread to find out about the non engine related bits that I can't find.

I don't know what the ratio of fith gear has to do with it, and I don't know what "pushing it" means, but stock G13 Jimnys spin about 3900rpm @100km/h. If you gear it taller (lower revs) you'll have poor response, economy will be terrible, and you'll forever be in 4th gear. You can mess around with cams all you like, but Suzuki knew where a g13bb had to rev to work on the highway and that's where they geared it.

Your cad sounds heavy and it sounds like you want to make it heavier. It's only a 1.3. Let it rev.

Fit a G16B as suggested above, it will do what you are looking for as they have better low down and mid range torque, and sell your G13.

This is what you need.

G16B short block.
