I know there is a few of you on here who have gone down this route, what issues did you run into with fitment? Is there enough room to fit a motor and auto box in without a body lift? will i run into issues with the sump on diff clearance?have no issue cutting the tunnel if required. Any pics of engine mounts would help. I'll work it out when it's sitting in the engine bay, just trying to form an idea in my head. I don't need comments from the peanut gallery on engine choice, it suits the application.

The closest car i can think of to what I think you're aiming to achieve is Fatzooks old ute.

Start with a lwb as I reckon a swb will be to short to have any sort of tail shaft. Is it going to be 2wd?

There's a ton of other engines that are much easier to fit for great power gains. Once the commy goes in I think you might be looking at hilux diffs front and rear and more. Unless you drive it like my grandma ; )

Shep's on the money here, 2WD. Commodore motor suits cos it was $100 with loom and ecu, plus replacements are cheap for the inevitable melted pistons.... Diff strength shouldn't be an issue, its not Suzuki gear. I'm more than happy to work the trans tunnel/firewall if necessary. I'm just hopping a can get the motor low enough and far enough back, with out causing issues with sump on diff clearance on the front. It may be 2wd but still needs a housing in the front. Ill see if i can find some pics of Fatzook's old rig. And just for the record, id never do this to something I planned on wheeling

Make the front a solid beam. A shorter shaft will matter less in this application than in a 4WD application provided its got an appropriate angle.

Sounds interesting, what tyres, diff and rear end?
I am guessing Hilux edit - For the diff.
rear end - as in suspension.

Hilux diff was my first choice, but I struggled to find one in my price range. I have a TF rodeo V6 diff I picked up for $100.
As for suspension, 4 link seems like the smart option, won't be a great deal more work than redoing the leafs and adding a track bar. As long as I can get the maths right. Tyres can wait for now, not sure what I want to do.

Pajero's while being one of the biggest heaps of shit on the road have huge strong rear diffs that never seem to break and are VERY cheap.

So whincup, are you saying, commodores are fast, and it needs a commodores motor in a terribly lightweight car, to beat them ?

Luckily I do not see that, being a very small town person, but I can dig that.
What I do not understand is this need to be able to beat someone from one red light to another.
In my youth, I was more interested in how far and fast I could go from one side of Australia to the other, 23 hours Port Lincoln to Darwin was a ripper that I will never beat, that was in my old Statesman, and 16 hours (time elaspsed, had a breakdown which held me back near 4 hours) from Darwin to Bundabeg on me bike, now that was a run and a half, sat on 240 all the way.
These days, you try that, and they would shoot you.

But around here every thursday night heaps of P platers have lap night. they basically drive up and down the main highway through Rockhampton from about sunset, and some go all the way to midnight. being public roads its not done as a race or fast because theres always cops with speed cameras, but everyone likes to race 0-60 or 0-70 which is the limit depending on the exact location. i did it once, got bored after about 5 minutes. but people seem to love it, particularly P platers with commodores. i assume major cities all around have something similar...

I can't imagine what drives p platers to race at street lights... Not with all the legal alternatives for them to use. I do agree with SuziBlu though, I regularly did a run from Townsville-Brisbane, always tried to beat my previous time, and it was fucking fun(Why do I feel like a bad uneducated person for swearing on AZ now ). Back on topic, front end will be a stripped down NT. Pick this up next week, want to get it fitted so i'm not working on stands when I do the motor. want33s, I hadn't even considered a Pajero when I looked for a diff. Paj would be a more suitable width, 1375 vs 1470 for the rodeo. Ill keep an eye out, see what turns up cheap. mudboy, do you run an auto? Any pics you have of clearance/mounts would be appreciated.

yes I run a t700 auto with twin hilux transfers, i will take some pics of as such as you want, just PM me your email address and when I am next in the garage I will take a few.
you may need to rear mount the radiator like I have done, but other than that it does fit in there nicely
