Looking to use a cheapo flood/diffusion LED as a camp light powered from one of my 12V sockets. My plan is to use a light on top of say 8 foot worth of tent pole. Am I right in thinking these things aren't just plug-and-play? What do I need to do to get an LED light working from a 12VDC point?

Any suggestion what sort of lumen rating should I be looking for a camp light?

Plug n play mate. Millions of options on ebay for camp/work lights that will run straight off 12V (pretty sure most of them run from 10 - 32 volt even), then just add a ciggy socket plug on yourself.

Might want to have a permanently wired ciggy socket somewhere if you havent already. Would get old quick having to have the ignition on to use it otherwise.

I have a couple of these mounted on the roofrack of mine. Throws out awesome light for the $$$

Yeah I got 2x12V sockets in the back running straight from the battery.

OK, it's decision time. Ebay has heaps of options between $50 - $100. Now i'm wondering if I should opt for a single flood LED around 2000 lumens or two around 1000 - 1200 lumens each... it'll cost the same in the end.

Shadows are annoying, I'd be going for two units.

With 2 of, you can widen the area. So your decision would be determined by 1. The size of the area. 2. How much light you need across that area.

I've been using the 1850lumen 18w Round Flood lights on mine and customers vehicles for years. I have one on a lead which I attach to a tent pole for around the camp and it's awesome.

I also supply 27w and 50w floods for industrial applications and they are all good. Be careful going too powerful or too bright for just a camp light as it can get old having this second sun shining in your eyes all night.
