Hey guys, was thinking to do a body lift on my jimny, but after having a chat with some people, they told me it was a grey area because a 2" lift is legal, but is it legal when you have airbags, and will insurance still cover you?

Cheers, wolf

depends where you are.
from what i understand 2" is all you can lift in Queensland. that 2" at the roof so tyres, springs and bodylift will all come out of that 2" budget

i have 6.85" of overall lift through 3" springs, 2" BL and 1.85" of tyres. i think if you modplated (QLD thing) the body lift then no one would bother to look at the tyres and springs.
in the NT you can just apply to do whatever you want, if it gets approved by the vehicle standards board then your good.

if you hit shit hard enough the airbags will still go off. the entire system is built into the body of the car.
legal or not i dont know, but cant see why it wouldnt be legal.

In Qld you are allowed 2" body + 2" spring + tyres

The jimny should be the same as the GV in that the airbags are activated by a g sensor in the dash as apposed to sensors in the bumper, therefore it is possible to legally fit a bodylift. That said you do need a mod plate so it depends on who you get to approve it

its better to just look up the regulations rather than hearsay from a forum. especially if you're looking for the legality of stuff.

under code LS9 of the QCOP ( queenslands verson of the NCOP) you are in suspension allowed a lift of 50mm to 125mm with anything under 75mm does not need certification this does not include Body lift.

max height in suspension alone is 50mm

tyres can be on a 4wd a maximum of 25mm larger in vehicle height.

all body lifts it sounds like they need to be certified.
body lift max height in body blocks alone is 50mm

there is other rules as well.

download this PDF. Click Here

and go to page 52

Slight mistake Blakey, tyres can lift the vehicle by 25mm therefore have a 50mm increase in diameter but is saying that you could legally fit larger tyres but run a pressure in them to provide 25mm of lift

what did i say wrong?

if your tyre lifts the vehicle more then 25mm then its technically illegally modified.

also i have found a mistake in the QCOP in one section they say under 75mm does not require a lane change test, then a couple pages down is say greater then 50mm requires a lane change test.

I never changed the tyre part. I had always said what you have quoted. Which is right. Increase in tyre can only increase vehicle height by 25mm.
I removed something I said about body lifts. Which was worded badly and could of caused confusion. So I removed it.

Other than that I changed nothing in my post.

Let's just agree that 25mm of lift = 50mm of extra tyre diameter, nod and smile, and move on to the real issue: how long until this zook is stolen.

while yes 50mm dia does make a 25mm height difference i never said anything on a diameter I said 25mm vehicle height. and the QCOP mentions a vehicle height not diameter, so really i was never wrong.

not saying he is wrong just pointing out i was not wrong.

they can try and steal mine wont get much tho. or get it very far without a towtruck

pretty sure QLD's rules are a reflection of WA's - in which case its 50mm including tyres/suspension & body lift... after that it needs engineering. over 150mm they won't even consider. there's also rules on rim width, track increase and tyre size increase (if you exceed tyre size increase you also need to do brakes testing).

IMO - consult an engineer - most will talk to you about your planned mods for free.

QLD is 75mm and under does not need certification this includes suspension and tyres only, body lift will always require certification.

We've never had that. It was proposed but the new QLD rules are exactly what everyone else in the thread has said.

Blakey sumarised it, if you've got more questions read it. Way better than a bunch of unkown people telling you all the wrong things.

done some research, from my understanding body lifts are illegal unless plated no exceptions. Suspension and Tyre lift up to 2" no worry what so ever, lift up to 75mm combined comes under QCOP, it has to follow their rules but no plate needed nor swerve test. Above 75mm to 125mm total lift needs mod plate and swerve test. costs a $1000 plus to have done in qld plus approx $160 to $250 depends on engineer.

Straight from the horses mouth and Qcop documents. This is the latest, but is reveiwed every 2 years.

My advice Lower your tyre pressures, up the load in your car (tools ect) this can drop like 30mm plus of ride height. especially in small jimnys, very very quickly lol
