Hey all does anyone break king pins in there wide track? I have just pulled my front end down and the passengers side is broken again! Usually it's just the top but this time it's also the bottom.....

What would cause this? Just hard knocks?

Not sure what causes it but the last time I did mine (a long time ago now but bugger all k's) there were two broken kingpins, I think they were both bottom though.

Have you replaced the bearings when you replaced the kingpins, done the bolts up to the correct torque and are they shimmed?

Yeah always put new bearings in.... I have looked into it further and heard of people having the king pin bearing seize onto the king pin... Daves4wd has broken one before... I guess it's just wear and tear....

Yeah that was a while ago... Haven't checked em in a while... Might be from voicing up stuff?? Big shock loads?? Could be in need of doing preload checks and stuff to set it up spot on again

yes both bottom ones, drivers and passenger sides.
Snapped at base of pin and mount plate, pin material must be harder / brittle there due to weld.
Bearings weren't good, too much clearance, suspect king pins got a good pounding.

Big tyres, torque and spirited driving will do it.

How dead were the bearings when you pulled them out?

Was able to "rock" the rims , so I tried to do up wheel bearings.
Didn't make any difference at all.
Pulled the hub down and had trouble getting the bottom outer taper race off the diff,
as the lip was very narrow compared to new bearings. Rollers & cage showed signs of overheating too.
Should mention the black sludge around bearing was more mud grit then grease.
Also could not separate RH wheel bearing from spindle as it started to cut in and bound to it.
Only positive is as long as king pin mounting plate hasn't fallen off, the wheel will stay on.

The first time i broke one the bearing was shagged! this time bearings are sweet... i would re use them but the kit comes with new ones....

Cheers everyone! Has been getting used in anger because the front locker has been playing up! It's been ripped out at the same time and getting new springs and pins....
