You might remember a while back I was whining about my engine light being on solid  not flashing, just on all the time.

It is supposed to come on every 50, 80 and 100,000 km to make extra money for dealers.... er, I mean, to get you to service the emission system. I did the right thing and replaced the O2 sensor but couldn't turn the light off.

I found out how.... you simply pull the tail light fuse, turn the ignition on (don't start it) wait a minute (more than 20 seconds) turn off ignition, replace fuse..... enjoy your engine light being off pompoms

Hope this helps someone

I don't recall the check engine light being on as a mileage based service indicator on anything other than North American (US/Canada) production, which would have been a SideKick and not a Vitara - on those models the warning is triggered by a switch in the odometer, so resetting it doesn't happen by any sort of fuse pulling or battery disconnection - it is done by flipping a switch under the dash.

If you have a 98 Vitara, with a check engine light on, there is a code set and it needs to be cleared after repairs have been completed, by disconnecting the battery

Nah, tried that several times... left the battery disconnected over night

... MADE ... ... NO ... ...DIFF... ERENCE ... :kissmyarse: :thefinger:

Yeah fordem, ours don't have the switch. I saw that on the tube, looked for it, not there. My handbook that came in the glovebox says the light comes on solid at 50,80 and 100,000 km to tell you to get the emission system checked (ie, to make dealers some money) I changed the 02 sensor but couldn't find any way of turning off the light, other than take it to a dealer and pay $166 (quoted by local Suzuki dealer)

So I thought I would do a community service and let people know the easy way that worked on mine, save someone else the sh!t I have gone thru to find the answer

did you pull the error codes to find out what it was or go straight to the o2 sensor which is one of the common ones to bring up the CEL?

can you please tell me what page in the owners handbook the info about the CEL light be found on, i have one for a SV420 but have never seen it?

funny that the only other person that regularly used that kiss my ass smilie is on the moderated list.

Did you check the codes before replacing the O2 sensor? the light should off if the fault is fixed.
