The heater fan in my SV420 Vitara only works on speeds 3 and 4, on 1 and 2 it does nothing at all. I presume that the motor is OK because it works in 3 and 4, does that mean I need a new fan speed switch?

With the A/C button turned on, does A/C condenser fan turn on and compressor clutch engage when on speeds 1 & 2? If so check your fan resistor block. If not, its the fan switch.

I don't think the A/C works on speed 1 and 2, but I'm not sure as the A/C isn't working at the moment. I guess I'd better fix the A/C...

You can still just rip out the resistor block and check with a multimeter if any of the resistors have an open circuit. 9 times out of 10 it's the block. Easy fix.

How hard is it to replace the resistor block?

With the ignition on/engine off, if the A/C condenser fan and compressor can be heard on speeds 1 and 2 (as well as the good fan speeds of 3 & 4), the resistor block is faulty. If they don't, then the switch is faulty. The A/C condenser fan and compressor wont energise as they wont get a signal from the faulty fan speed switch in positions 1 & 2.

Hope this makes sense :D

The block needs to be kept cool, so it will be in the blower fan housing, underneath or behind the glovebox in its ducting somewhere. I can check mine later to see the location exactly.

Just had a quick look, well more of a fell really! The block seems to be between the firewall and the blower fan. If you reach up behind the fan from the passengers side footwell, you should feel some wires attaching to something held in by screws in the blower fan housing. That should be it, I didn't have a mirror to check as I need to head off to work. Looks like you just need to drop the fan housing to access, which doesn't look too bad. Then test the block for an open circuit on each resistor. Hope this helps!
