So I'm wondering as to what oils/ preservatives to put in 2 diffs a box and transfer case. Regular cheap gear oil? Maybe deisel even to disperse water? A fine engine oil too? The transfer case just leaks the oil out of the driveshaft outputs so i guess it will stay un lubed? Unless I can seal the outputs really well? Should i block the diff breather pipes? I have so many ideas part of me makes me want to just shove it to the side. The rear diff and t/case will be going into the car in the next few weeks by the way thanks

I have had a transmission i just dumped been sitting outside in the weather for a few months it only recently just developed surface rust on the input shaft.

I have put my spare transfer case double wrapped in garbage bags. Its mainly the exposed stuff eg the shafts that rust. i think just putting garbage bags over them should be enough. Spray the shafts with some wd40 to before covering them.

OR just spray wd40 and wrap them in a tarp.

i have a cosworth A6 camshaft that was in one of the mk1 cortina's dad played with in the late 60's, it's wrapped in an 40yo oily rag & grease paper & wrapped closed in tie wire & is sitting in it's original box... it's been ages since the last time i checked it, but sill looked like new.

don't waste your time with WD40, find the cheapest home brand gear oil from the supermarket & go crazy. plug the outputs of the tcase with rags & seal it up with glad wrap a oil soaked rag around any machined/sealing surface & glad wrap that mofo like you're bad boy bubby.

have seen the diesel/oil mix used to help prevent old cars from literally disappearing into the ground from rust... once dry it forms a nice layer.

Few weeks long term? No rust on the transfer case and I have had it for around 6 months.

If if I kept the transmission I would of wrapped the exposed metal in oily raggs. Plugged breather taped up sensor conections and rolled it in a Tarp. But if only 3 weeks not much is going to rust. The wd40 only lasted around 4 months before it was useless.

Ok cool thanks rags soaked in oil shall do, I'll pump it all up with some cheap oil too
