Hi all.Had my Jimny converted 2 weeks ago now with the fab M18A VVT. What a difference that makes and mines an automatic as well,I have also done some towing with my 6x4 trailer and not a prob.
I had my car approved and inspected by Transport SA and they gave it the approval so while he was under the bonnet I asked about Extractors and was told that yes I can have extractors which means I can get rid of the restrictive manifold/cat unit and do a 2inch ehaust with a hi-flow inline cat,so I have already ordered the extractors and am currently saving for the exhaust to be done, the best price so far was $800 including fitting the extractors I have purchased, that should make it better again. I havnt noticed any difference in the economy, its no worse but may get better with a proper flowing exhaust and im hoping to pick up a bit more yeeha as well(thats debatable)...I was running 91 octane fuel and it was pinging real bad so switched to 98octane and now its quiet as and goes better, surprise surprise....I had a local performance tuning/dyno workshop do my conversion, they are Classic Performance And Dyno located at Hackham here in SA and they done a fantastic job, real neat and tidy. I most definately recommend them.
And so far the Trans is doing a great job because I have read that sometimes the autos do not like the extra Torque but I cannot complain yet, wait and see huh.
Tried a few times to attach a pic but can't work it out...bloody Apple

I'm in Adelaide if that's what you mean?
So what is it you mean by that then? Instead of just assuming that every one knows what you mean

getting more air and fuel in should be your priority especially if your already lean, otherwise you'll be putting your m13 back in before long

what you have just posted was some drivel about, paying some one to put a m18 in your car. no actual tech. that's what I mean.

you may as well have just made a post to say I bought nice shoes

How have you determined the auto is fine? With a temp gauge?

I assume you are running the m13 computer? How were your a/f ratios looking on the dyno?

That'd be some tech.

Extractors can fuck the af ratios. Mine did this and im runing a m13. But the relocation of the o2 sensors actually made my car run rich so you might be in luck...

These are my shoes

Yes it is the m13a ecu and its running great...he did do a emissions test as it was required by Transport SA and the emissions are perfect he said, which is good news. I am going to be installing a Trans cooler as soon as money permits as I am concerned about the temps but so far its running good....I do know that they used M13A throttle body and kept the M18A injectors and to date there has been no fault codes and no erratic revs, always idles around 8-900rpm.
on the Dyno it made 65kw and 105.6nm.He said overall I have got a 31% gain,it sure goes well, the hills in my area are not a problem anymore.
And of course they swapped over the sump and oil pickup, the rocker cover and also the mount which the oil filter screws to as the Liana one was extremely close to the engine mount and may have hit?
Also had to swap over the fuel rails as the M18A one was damaged before I got it.
Im stoked now. What next to modify??????

how do you feel about cuting guards.

it may not be pretty, but it works

2" of lift gives you choice to select aftermarket gear

I havnt thought of that...I can swing a grinder but cutting my guards is something I will have to really think about. I have seen a number of different rims now that look good. In your opinion what is the most common size peeps are putting on their rides? And what comfortably fits under the guards as they are?

The 1.8 will run much better with the Liana throttle body, hope you still have it.

Actually I read on this forum somewhere that the 1.8 TB runs bad with erratic and unstable idle and doesnt really flow that much better,The person also posted a vid on you tube of this behaviour...my 1.3TB is working well, nice n smooth...I will save to get my exhaust done and take it from there.

erratic and unstable idle is due to a idle air control sensor. a bigger throttle body will not be more restrictive.
the restriction will be on the filter and MAF sensor with the M18 throttle body, so that might need a upgrade with a bigger filter and box.

If you read this entire thread you'll have all the updates. I ran the 1.3 throttle body for a few weeks before getting the 1.8 TB to work properly, the erratic idle is due to the Idle control valve getting stuck from sitting at the wrecker for a while. The difference in the way the engine performs is way better than what you'll get from an exhaust upgrade , plus there's a reason that Suzuki put a larger TB on the 1.8. Until you sort this you may as well have fitted the cheaper 1.5.

Awesome thread, thanks mate.i rang around and found a M18A TB also with the top coolant hose and bought it so hopefully I should get it before the weekend..I'm looking forward to this...hopefully it makes a difference...looks easy enough to change...I still will get the exhaust done as well, that should help things also.

Okay,so today I got my 5 point bit set and went about changing the TB to the 1.8 TB. Fairly straight forward to do and even changing over the IAC thingy was a sinch with the right tools and so far its running great. Been out driving most of the day and it is going much better than the 1.3 TB......However,because mine is on the 1.3 intake manifold I think that there may be some restriction still coz with the new 1.8TB on there when you look down throught the guts of the TB you can see a slight ridge jutting out from where the 1.3TB was! Does anyone know if this can or should be ground off to match the size of the 1.8TB or will it make much of a difference or even just leave it?
Any ideas???

Hi all...so today with da missus in the car armed with a stopwatch I did three 0-100 runs and the best was done in 13.26 seconds, and from what i have been reading on other threads that seems to be quite good, considering mines an Auto as well....getting the exhaust done may help things a liitle???? It still seems to have a bit of lag but may be due to me still using the 1.3 intake manifold like I mentioned in the above post? dunno,or that its still running the 1.3 exhaust and cast manifold?

FWIW my auto pre vvt stocker did 0-100 in 17.49 seconds, so that's quite an improvement.

I'd machine/file it down to match the TB

I also had that dreaded flat spot at full open throttle from idle that lasted about 2 or 3 seconds so after reading the above mentioned thread I blocked off the pipe going into the air intake from the rocker cover and voila,it worked, flat spot gone so it looks like I will be getting a oil catch can also.
Haha I couldn't resist, out front of my place is a 300 metre stretch of bitumen before it goes to dirt so I stopped, put it in first(automatic) left foot on the brake and then floored it and bugga me she lit up.haha I was surprised,it wouldn't do that before.

Lol. Jimny Autos are cheap, easy to find, and have loads of excess torque handling capacity.

really?

changed your tune a fair bit. i mean i have steered clear of a auto previously based on your previous advice

Gwagensteve wrote:

1. Is there any agreement on here - is the Jimny auto weak?

The jimny auto is at the limit of its torque handling capacity behind a G13BB. (110Nm) This is unlike the vitara autos, which can handle far more torque than their sent by the vitara engines.

Quote:
2. I have 31's, have a WT TC that I want to put in but will be running 4.16 or 4.9 gears? (Can't remember which was suggested to me I need to look through my messages) and the Jimny auto would also further increase the low range reduction is that correct?

Sort of. 1st gear in the Jimny auto is 2.95 or thereabouts - its not lower than your manual. However, the torque converter can slip and when it does it acts as a gear reduction - the ratio is around 2:1, so when engine revs are below torque converter stall speed (circa 2000rpm) and load is high, you can get an equivalent 6:1 out of first gear. However, once revs rise above stall speed, you're back at whatever numerical gear ratio the gearbox offers. This is great for crawling, but slipping the converter generates LOADS of heat, and heat kills automatics.

Quote:
3. What kind of RPM could I expect to sit on for 90/km/hr or 100km/hr with this set up?

Cant help there. Search the ratios of the Jimny auto in 4th and compare that to your manual. It's likely cruise revs will drop a bit.

Quote:
3a. On this note am I correct that 5.16 gears would leave me sitting on 4000RPM at 80kim/hr or close to? However 5.16 gearing would give me better low range crawling ability right?

As above. You'll have to crunch those numbers for yourself. It's not hard to build a gearing calculator in excel - it's 10 minutes well spent.

Quote:
4. Is there another auto that is considered stronger then the Jimny (if it IS considered weak) that is a fairly easy swap? (no tunnel modification) eg Vitara? what would the gearing effect of this be on the above mentioned set up?

No auto will fit without tunnel mods. Every other auto is stronger. Trimatic from a carby vitara would be the easiest fit with a lucky 13 adapter but you might have issues with road gearing (or maybe not - don't jimny's have a direct 5th gear?) the AW-4 is probably the ultimate auto, but it's bulky and requires electronics to make it shift. It has very nice gearing though and is well suited to off road work. Any auto is going to require jackshaft and mount modifications, work to adapt a shifter, tunnel mods, some wiring, potentially a kick down (TV) cable install, cooler and gauge. It's not a small job. Tunnel mods are neither here or there.

Quote:
5. If there is not an easy option is there modifications that can be performed on the Jimny auto to help it out?

The first thing is to make sure you're not using the auto to correct for inadequate gearing. If the auto won't lock the converter on cruise and you're slipping the converter hard off the line it's going to die. Gearing needs to be spot on. Then, a really big cooler, or two, and a gauge. There's nothing else. These autos don't have any aftermarket support so there isn't a shift kit or upgraded clutches or anything for them.
