A couple of days ago we got stuck on the side of a sand hill with a slipping clutch.
I assumed the clutch was stuffed and have pulled it out.
Looking at the clutch plates they really don't look to bad.....well not bad enough to slip like it did.
But the flywheel is very polished or glazed which I assume wouldn't help and should probably be machined.
Would you think the pressure plate or springs might have lost some tension, and combined with the polished fly wheel and worn plates be enough to cause the slipping and a new standard clutch kit solve the problem, or are the standard clutches in the 96 Coilys too soft and I would be better off going for a heavy duty clutch?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Get the flywheel ground and put a standard clutch in.

These engines do not need heavy duty clutches (even with 20% more power, the sierra clutch is fine).
From experience it was a stupid decision, a waste of money and a PITA

Even with a 1.6 mpfi i still run stock clutch
They last better and are nicer to use than the majority of hd ones out there

I dont suppose you know what I need to torque the flywheel bolts up to?

Not super critical but i always use locktight on all the clutch bolts and of course heaps on the flywheel bolts.

FWIW i am on my 2nd second hand jimny clutch off a low km wreck. They have the pressure of a HD clutch but the goodness of being a stock part. The feel of the pedal is great. plus, off a wreck they're quite affordable =P
