G'day gents,

My V6 Grand vitara comes from the manufacturer with 235/60/R16 only.

This equates to a tyre diameter of 16 inches plus a tyre wall of 141mm. Now I can by law increase that tyre wall by 25mm (to get my total 50mm diameter tyre increase). So I've got a tyre wall of 166mm to play with - no questions asked.

This gives me 235/70 R16. Anyone got a set of A/T in this size on their GV?? - any rubbing and what lift have you got?

However, here is where it gets a but grey area... The 2.0L GV comes in a 215/70 R16 (slightly different offset). This is a bigger tyre then the V6 the 215/70 being a tire wall of 150.5mm. Assuming this is acceptable I can argue that anything up to 215/80 R16 is legal. The V6 is a higher performance version too. Does anyone know the general attitude towards this - is that perfectly normal, or do they insist on it being the same model and trim engine too?

Obviously in any case, tyres can't rub on the vehicle.

Anyone successful running a 225/75 R16 or a 215/80 R16 on a GV with just minimal lift kit?

Thanks

If someone is going to ping you on it it will be what you have fitted vs whats on the placard.

I have a Toyo A/T 235/70 as a spare that was fitted to someone elses GV that has lots of cuts on the outside tread where it was contacting the steel lip under the flare in the rear. A bit of trimming would have fixed it.

I run 225/70 BFG AT and "2inch" lift. The front tyres just touch the chassis at full lock, not serious at all, has just buffed some paint off. The rear has signs of touching the inner plastic guard at full flex, again, nothing that worries me.

edit: Also when you say the 2.0l GV has a different size tyre that is only the 2 door versions. All 5 door SQ GV's (not sure about xl7?) sold in Australia are 235/60 as stock.

That's not entirely accurate... The SQ420 GV are 235/60/R16

Having owned a number of gv's and of different types, I can say that this table accurately reflects what my GV's have had:

Also there is some more info on that site about all things GV tyre sizes

That's disappointing because 225/70 is smaller than what I had in mind, I had 235/70 in mind. I think BFG AT are a little chunky on the edges of the tyre width though... Having had these before, in comparison to lesser brands. I'm firmly in the poverty tyre camp this time around, so I don't think I'll be going BFG.

I will be getting the snipper out on the front inner guards, I can see that almost anything bigger is going to rub the front inner bumper a little. I can sort that easily.

The front inner bumper just needs a little metal tab to be bent. it's literally a two minute job.

I've just had another look at the national guidelines and I think it prohibits narrower tyres too in my understanding. Technically I could get pinged on 225/70 for being narrower. Basically my options are 235/70... Anyone got 235/70 and happy with them?

Really? My 225's measured exactly the same across the flat part of the tread as the 235/60 HT .The 235's had more sidewall bulge.

Plenty of people run the 235/70 with minimal rubbing. If it is an issue then deal with it when it arises.
This is the tyre I would have preferred if the 225's hadn't come up so cheap at the right time.

Thanks for that, Yeah I think I should just give it a go. Probably if I put mud terrains on I'd get rubbing, but an All Terrain I think I'll be okay with my 30mm lift.

My 225s are narrower across the tread than the previous 235s, I can also break them loose easier despite the fact that they are taller (225/70 vs 235/60 - both Dunlop AT3, and at the same pressure)
