I have an opportunity to buy what we call an '82 SJ410K "trayback" located in the very flat and dry state of Oklahoma.

Image

It is relatively rust-free (Okay, there is a small rust hole in one of the floors)...

However, it has a barely-running Toyota 4KC engine/gearbox in it. Otherwise, it is in nominally stock condition - although I am wondering what the wire running from the bonnet slots to the doorframe does....

My question:

Can I install a G13 engine/gearbox fairly easily (ie the motor mounts are the same between the original 1-liter and the G13)? Or should I find a 1-liter 3-cylinder Swift engine? They are easier to find complete with TBI and ECU in the Salvage yards and the Sierra 5-speed will bolt right up...

I have the 5-speed "WT Sierra/Samurai" gearbox and the G13 engine should not be too hard to find.

I would be using an aftermarket carburetter and bypass the ECU (if any) on the G13.

Something this old will pass inspection as an Antique here in Missouri.

This would be a daily driver as opposed to an offroader...

Thanks in advance!

No, sj410 engine mounts are completely different. The transmission tunnel is narrower, they run an externally regulated alternator, gearbox mount is different, driveshaft flanges are unique, brakes are unboosted, axle housings and third members are unique to the 410.

Whist everything is broadly similar in configuration, there are no interchangeable driveline parts between the 410 and 413. (A 413 transfer can be swapped in excluding driveshaft flange clashes, but the ratios are different.
If the transfer case has a 4wd light provision, "normal" reduction gears and rebuild kits can be used as per a samurai. If there's no light switch, the transfer is unique to the 410 and there is no aftermarket support.

Thank you for your quick reply!

This truck sounds like a project gone bad.

4K conversions were very common in 410's in Australia 30 years ago. They're actually not that bad- I've driven a 5K converted 413 LWB and it was quite torquey. I don't think there's any good reason to use a cast iron pushrod motor these days though.

A g13/g16 conversion is entirely feasible, it's just more work than putting a g16 in a 413.

In the absence of readily available 413 LWB's, that car looks like a solid starting point for a project, so long as you fit in the cab.

Ahh... fitting into the cab. i hadn't thought of that. Being 175cm and 89kg, it might work. Perhaps I'll be taking a quick drive to Oklahoma this weekend.

The seller wants $4963 (Aus), $3500 (US). That's a lot of cash for a really old semi-running Suzuki even though it is extremely rare...

That's more than they fetch here, but not that much more considering it looks very clean.... And they're not rare here at all. I have three at my house, plus a LWB 413 styleside.

You should fit in the cab depending on how the seats are mounted. In Stock form the seats are tiny and non adjustable (at all, even to slide) that car looks to have aftermarket reclining seats and these significantly eat into interior room.

I think they are more common in different parts of the country.

There are very few around here. I've only ever seen a handful up here.

Hardtops are very prevalent though. You'd easily pay 4.5 for a ute here, considering a mate showed me an EOI on a LWB styleside I sold a while back for 1750, with offers for above 5.

Whether or not they'd actually pay that I cant comment, but I wouldn't pay more than 3 for it.

Just to hi-jack the thread a little - I have just swapped one of these for a treadle sewing machine - It has a not to good 1.3 motor in it and I have a fully rebuilt 1.6 EFi with donor car - How hard is it to drop it in this car?

I could be wrong tony but I'm pretty sure Gwagons build thread has a fair bit of detail involved with putting one in, though it may be slightly more complicated because he used an aw4 .
