If you have an Auto Lokka in the front can you set one hub to 'free' so that you can steer?

Yes. But only to a degree. The locked in wheel will still cause some resistance...

I have had a Sierra, and now a Vitara, with auto lockers front and rear for years. I have no problem steering. I had a problem steering when I had a welded front diff. I used to unlock one hub for steering, and only locked it again if 4wd was needed.

Likewise. I've got an auto locker in the front with hubs that are permanently locked both on and offroad. Never have an issue with steering.

I think you just need to man up.
Auto lockers will disengage on when you back off the power

He already has a spartan in the rear diff, he just wasn't sure how a front one would effect it.

I got lock rites front and rear on 34s and don't struggle! Don't get me wrong sometimes it's hard but it's ok! I have had power steering set up in the shed for a year now... And undecided if I will use it or not!
