My moneys on the uni joints... It was exactly the same in my car recently, as soon as you started accelerating you could hear the sound of metal tapping on metal until you got up in revs, then it disappeared...
Put the car in gear, Get under the car and try rolling the drive shaft or tail shaft around - there should be no movement at all. If there is a fair bit of play, replace the uni joints - only costs around $50 for a set of two, and you can do it yourself on a saturday afternoon... (i did it last saturday arvo) (a uni joint press makes it a lot easier - if you don't have one, you'll want a socket set, a good hammer, and a can of WD40)
f;ange bolts? sound shagged,
i had a similar noise actually, only whne i accelerated in 3.4.5 i hurd a whining grinding noise, got to the point were ever gear was fuked, couldent talk on my phone, turned out to be a crushed bearing in my pinoin
