hey guys i am about to start a lwb build. i have almost everything except the rear drive shaft now my question is would it be easier to get one extended or use a shaft out of something else

i would say find a Drive shaft out of something else or get custom one made thats what i would do

yea i have heard that people use hilux shafts but i'm not sure if it still has to be modded

Yep. Rear section of a hilux 4wd 2 piece shaft from a 88-97 model. It is shorter than a sierra SWB rear shaft, so you'll need to get it re-tubed.

Benifits are.....

Bigger ( stronger ) tube
Longer spline
MUCH bigger ( and there for stronger ) Uni joints
WT bolt pattern.

You will however, have to remove your pinion and transfer case flanges to have the centre bore opened up 1mm to accept the slightly larger hilux locating spigot. Get this done when you have the shaft lengthened.

is it safe to use on road with it lengthened since i would like to be able to drive it on road

i dunno i have never had any experience with drive shaft so i wouldn't know

Safe as mate, but take it to a good shaft shop.

I have heard of people in the past using exhaust pipe for shaft's, not recommended, but it worked for that application..

well i will but at the moment its only a bare chassis so really not worth it
