I changed all the oils in the Jimny today. Gearbox and Transfer came out looking alright but i'm after a bit of advise on the diff oils.

Bloody glad I changed them, the front diff came out really thick and milky... what does that elude to?

The rear one wasn't as gluggy but was just really dark which is to be expected, however there was a fair bit of metal shavings on the magnet. Should I be worried about this.

It's done 150k km's and i'd be surprised if the diffs were changed any more than once.

Whatdya reckon?

Milky = water contamination. Stay out of the creeks/bogholes.
Dark means not changed often enough (usually)
Ground metal on plug means bits are wearing out probably due to infrequent oil changes.
It is a vicious circle once a diff starts eating itself... The ground metal destroys bearings etc which causes more wear.

So I pulled the spark plugs today, and they definately need changing but they were covered in oil!

Is there supposed to be oil in these spots? If not, how would it have got there?

which part of the plug was covered in oil, the ceramic end where the plug lead goes or the electrode side in the combustion chamber?

Nah there was no oil on the electrode, it was all on the ceramic end, the deep part that the lead goes into had heaps of oil in it, cyl 2 was the worst.

pretty sure there is a rocker cover o'ring gasket thingo for the plug tubes...

Hmm. i might have to look into it. I reckon I found a 4x4 Action thread last night that indicated it could be a valve o'ring and rocker cover gasket needing replacing. Can't bloody find it now though.

usually when you get a new rocker cover gasket for the G series 16v engines you will also get 4 round rubber gaskets that sit over the spark plug tubes on the head and the rocker cover gasket sits down on them to keep engine oil from leaking into the sparkplug tubes, with basic tools you should be able to swap over a new rocker cover gasket and 4x seals within 15-20 min if you've never done it before.

Yeh that sounds like what the trouble might be.

Can you recommend the best place to source those parts?
