This is by no means the be all and end all of testing or comparisons, but it's a good start

Nice - but without a way to gauge the distances, not that informative.

Now - back up the vehicle to double the distance, and repeat - I'm betting the LED will be out of range and the HID still going strong.

Don't get me wrong, LEDs have their place, as a flood beam work light they excel, but as a 60W "spot" beam, not so hot, and this is personal, my concept of a work light is to illuminate the work area, so a work light would not have a spot beam.

To achieve high intensity output, LED lamps need to have multiple LEDs, focussing multiple light sources onto a single point (which is the concept of a spot beam) just does not work, you can achieve it at one distance only move closer or further and you're no longer in focus.

what kind of distance is that?

I reckon my light bar does ok by itself, for where I use high beam, which rarely has more than a 100m straight stretch anyway

That's around 90m royce. Also thats 110w of HID vs one 60w LED

I didnt have enough room to recreate it at longer distances, but the people that see them in person are blown away. yes you need to focus them beam if you want distance, but thats not the point, you get flood and distance.

on the light bar issue........ so if i had twy 10-20inch bars on the roof but spread apart it would be ok?

Correct, the height restriction is no longer (used to be no lights above x amount of cm's)

With the light bar issue, is it only for forward facing lights or all lights? And will you still get done if they're not wired up?

I would buy HIDs again, mine are awesome and have a great spread aswell as distance.

Will be keen to see a light bar on my roof to get some wide angle spread, but I'll happily just wheel with what I've got currently.

I haven't jumped on the LED trend yet but i'm all for it.
To my knowledge in Victoria you can only have 4 forward facing lights, the two standard headlights and the 2 additional. Must be seen as a pair eg ARB's
Don't know the exact height limit, but not on the roof for on road use. (I have been done for that one!)

Anyone had any dramas with light bars and the boys in blue?

Yeah 4 sure, must be six ill have to look it up.
I had six forward facing with a grumpy cop. the two driving lights on bullbar (one had blown globe, must be working if on car) and the two on roof.

The whole even number of lights in QLD is a bit of a grumpy cop scam I reckon

I am sure in the old all about light vehicle modifications booklet you could get from there was no mention and the illistration they used to indicate things like no rod holders and aeriel mounts and stuff had 3 lights on it anyway

Saying it has to comply with an ADR not written to cover the lights and indeed even says the lights have to be 600mm apart (I dont have 600mm of room to fit lights!) is stupid, same ADR IIRC says no lights more than 1400mm off the ground, which is also allowed here
