I would probably advise not to go greater than the 0.8-1mm plug gap. Any 'power' increase is very minimal here as the plug electrode shields the spark anyway. The flame kernal will still travel in the same direction from the spark. The idea of a larger more powerful coil and increasing the plug gap to huge has been around for a while. Just remember the larger the gap the more energy it requires to bridge it. Hence the primary voltage flyback get higher and in return the secondary voltage increases. This puts added stress on the whole ignition electrical system. If the electricity can find an easier way to ground it will. This may be thru the plug leads or the insulation within the coil.
Just some thoughts,
Dan

Ok, COOL !
Well i opened up the gap on my new Bosch plugs, my feeler gauges only went up to 1mm, will get some better ones tomorrow, but so far, the Nippon Coil seems to work well with the 1mm spark gap
Thanks

Hi Dan,
You make some valid points... i think i will get the GT40 Coil before i open the spark gap further, and will leave it at 1mm and see how it goes...

if you need 1.2mm then you ise a 1mm and 0.2mm

Royce, I checked all the coils I could, gathering info, not a real lot out there.
The HEC you speak of, as far as I can work out, are replacements for OEM, no power increase.
Suziblu is gettn a chrissy present, vitara radiator, and MSD

Yep, what i meant to say is, that my feeler gauges only go up to 1mm in total, that is with all of them used
Hmmm ok, well i checked out a few online motoring forums, a couple where for Zook, and a couple werent, but, from what i can gather, GT40R are for Points, and GT40 are for Electronic, also the GT40 allow you to open up the spark gap more, as they can handle the extra load... I hear you Royce, but there is conflicting info...
It would be really great if we could have some Factual, Definitive Yes or No Info about Ignition system upgrades and it be put in the Tech section...

The trouble is, trying to get definitive answers, depending on which site you look at, you can get the answer you want.
I had the R to start with, because i was told thats the one for the Suzi, Royce told me thats bullshit, so I put on the GT40 and truly, there was a noticeable feel to her, how much, no idea, but it was easily felt.
I rang Rocket Industries about MSD, and they say that the GT40 is a fine coil for suzis and will complement the MSD ignition, soo, there is more confliction.

Well i went out and bought a GT40, Oil Filled, High Output coil for $63 !
The guy at Repco kept insisting that i need a GT40R for electronic ignition, but i told him my Zook does NOT have or need a resistor ! he he...
Apparently the GT40R have an internal resistor, didnt know that...
But i had a look on the old Nippon coil, and it says its a 12volt, not 8 or 9volts... so i will see how the GT40 goes, or if it blows up, or damages my electronic points... i hope it doesnt... ( Crossed Fingers, and touch wood )

Excellent, let us know how she goes with the new coil.
And, what gap you do.

Its 11pm here on the West Coast, and i just went outside to move my Zook of the lawn and into the garage, and... it took me a good 2 mins of cranking before i could even get my Zook to fire, and when it did, it sounded like it was running on 2 cyl, it took another 30 secs of pushing the gas pedal to keep it going long enough to idle, then it finally calmed down and began firing on all 4 cyl and idled ok, and then revved ok
Sooo... if this is what the GT40 Coil does for my Zook, then i am not impressed at all with it...
My Nippon coil would start my zook after just a few secs or less, even with the bigger spark gap... Not Happy Jan !
So now i am going to have to put my old Nippon Coil back on in the morning, as i am out and about on Sat clocking up a few kms, its 90km to Perth from where i am, and i want it to run reliably !
Anybody in Perth want a GT40 coil ?

Well iput the old Nippon Coil back on this morning, and its purring like a kitten !
Repco didnt want to give me my money back because it is an electrical item, and i could have damaged it, phhhht... i told them i can check the coil resistance if they would like, so they said oh, we will make an exception this time...
SuziBlu - Nope no moisture... i really wanted this coil to work...
Royce - No gloating, No i Told You So ?!?!
peaceout

GT40 suits points vehicle without a ballast resistor, GR40R suits points vehicle with a ballast resistor. I'm sorry but I would not have given anyone there money back, It is now a used part.. and electrical. You my friend have been very lucky to get anything back. I will not take any electrical component back unless the packaging is unopened..

How else am i gonna know if it works, unless i connect it up to my car and try it is used for 5 mins still used, its still new to me
I understand that Repco were under no obligation to refund my money, i wasnt going to force the issue with them, i was just gonna sell it on ebay if they didnt refund my money, its not as if i was a one time customer, i go in there a fair bit... anyway, i agree i was lucky to get my money back...

Its all good, dont sell aftermarket bits anymore anyway. I must admit that I was to lazy to read the earlier pages of this thread but I did see that royce had pointed out that this coil would not work in your application and therefor was of no use to you. But you tried it anyway. I know that the guy that sold it to you should have told you this aswell.. If you bought a tooth brush, opened the packet and brushed your teeth for 5 min, decided that you dont like it because it is too soft so you put it back in the packet and took it back. Would you expect a refund? would you like to be the person whom purchased it after somone else had used it? Sorry to be so perdantic but after years of having people bring parts back because they thought that it was the problem and it turned out to be something different, you want to educate others about what you have to go through every day.
I hope that didn't come off too strong, it wasn't a direct dig at you. Just pointing out the facts from the other side of the counter...

However, if the guy behind the counter says "this is the part for your car" and it doesn't work, you have every right to take it back for a refund...

Providing that you have given the parts guy the correct information of course
Why do you think parts guys ask so many questions and dont like it when you answer "it dosent matter, they are all the same" A few months ago there was a discussion about 1.3l sierra clutches on here. Most people will tell you that they are all the same, yet clutch industries (ex pbr clutch) list 3 different clutches. Why? it is because over the years they have found that there are variences thoughout the models. Hell, mitsubishi can have different parts from month to month of build... and then revert back
But as the installer YOU ultimatly bare the responsibility to make sure you have been supplied with the correct parts BEFORE you fit them. ie; no mechanic should fit a clutch to a car and later on when they cant get the box back in or go to take off and find that there is no drive only blame the parts dude because he should have made sure that the clutch plates spline was correct before fitting it to the car.
It can get very difficult and sometimes you need to look at a problem before you can make a final decision...

All good and true, but you have people on here, me, saying, that it is a great idea, from personal findings.
I stand by my statements, the GT40 I put on my 1.3l zook is a great upgrade, works wonders.
Because of my saying how good an upgrade they are, 2 of my friends have done the same, and also say how great they are.

Yep i had GT40 Coils on ALL my Holdens, they worked well !
Ahhh a 1.3L Sierra, they may like the GT40, but my 89 Vitara G16A engine did not like the GT40 one bit, it just said
Oh well, we live and learn through experience and failure, and i learnt what my Zook ignition doesnt like now...

Old Holdens would be GT40R
I would like the wrong info in this thread to stop for the sake of people searching in the future, whether it works for you or not GT40 of any kind is wrong for any electronic ignition Suzuki

Perhaps a list of coils that will work for each model Suzuki. Also a warning in this threads title about GT40's.
Even though it has worked on SuziBlu's, it hasn't worked on MacBear's. I can see Royce's concern… Someone may not read the whole thread, jump the gun and go out a buy a coil that will not work correctly in their vehicle.

Yes you are right, my old Holdens had the GT40R...
Maybe if you could put a proper answer to the GT40 question in the Tech section, something like " GT40 Coil Yes or No ", as i think thats where people will go to first...
