Guys,

Sometimes after I turn right my rear diff makes a snapping sound and the rear end of the car gets thrown all over the road...it only used to do it occasionally now it has started to become more frequent...any ideas as to what might cause this? When I did the rear bearings the axels looked to be in good condition...could it be the backlash is not set properly in the rear diff?

Im thinking of ripping it out this saturday when I do my front one for a look but I dont know what I should be looking at to be honest

I dont think backlash would make a difference. If backlash was real bad your diff would be making noise and prob getting hot.
Has your driving style changed? New tyres? Is one tyre worn more than the other? Rotated tyres recently?

well that would make sense...is it a difficult job for a diff shop?

if they need reshimming would they make horrible twanging noises like that?

ive got to take my front in there to have it installed next week so I might as well get the rear done at the same time

Check your tyre pressures too.

My locker was acting funny, was due to one tyre having lost a little air.

driving style hasnt changed...tyres are all good on the pressure and wear fronts as they are nearly brand new

after doing some more reading im considering not putting this thing back in the rear...anyone got a spare W/T open centre with factory CW&P they want to sell me?

I wouldnt mind doing a welded diff instead!

the shimms which are on the drive gears whear down and need to be re shimmed. It onely takes a few thow and it starts to let go at all the rong times. Its not a hard job just time consuming.it took me a few goes at it to get it right but once you figer out the right set of shimms it is problum solved.and well worth knowing how it works

The reason I don't have a lockright anymore is for the reasons you described above. Every thing I did to make it behave failed, so it got replaced with an air locker. Best upgrade ever.

Ive got lockrights front and rear and they both work great, dont know what you guys are or arent doing to yours!

haha, that's very true.... considering i've never owned a vehicle that's stayed stock, although my airlocker is being gayer than aids ATM.

Geeze, you blokes are harsh! I've done 5000km on my Lockwrongs now and haven't had any real issues with them. You do have to take it a bit easier in carparks (reverse to first) and not get on the throttle when changing drive from one inside wheel to the other, but with mine and doing the above it is pretty much invisible. Slight tug either way when getting on and off the throttle at speed is about all that can be felt, and you soon adjust to that.

Hell, my wife even drove it 60km round trip to work and back, on 100kph highways, for a week while her car was elsewhere

I'm still going to fit it in the front I just don't have much faith in them in a diff that sees drive on the road all the time

hay atari. even a noisy lockright works better then your difflock at the moment hay.
i wonder if the people that keep slagging off at lockrights are just embarrassed that they spent 2 grand for a similar outcome.
